Best all-around pick
Lewis Creek National Recreation Trail
Between Coarsegold And Oakhurst • Shaded Creekside Trail With Waterfalls • Best For Classic Sierra Feel
A cool, forested trail that follows Lewis Creek past two photogenic waterfalls and plenty of good picnic rocks.
Park at one of the pullouts along Highway 41 and drop quickly into a hushed canyon of incense cedar, pine, and oak. The path rolls along the creek to Corlieu and Red Rock Falls, where you can scramble around on the granite and feel the mist on hotter days. Go early on summer weekends if you want quieter scenery and easier parking.
02
Best for big views
Fresno Dome Trail
High Country Northeast Of Coarsegold • Granite Dome Summit Hike • Best For Wide-Open Panoramas
A short but memorable climb to a granite summit with sweeping views over the Sierra high country.
The drive up forest roads is part of the adventure, trading foothill heat for cool air and tall pines. From the trailhead, an easy-to-follow path leads through open forest before the final rocky push onto Fresno Dome itself. On top you get nearly 360-degree views, making this a great spot for sunrise, sunset, and photography-minded hikers.
03
Best waterfall scramble
Angel Falls via Willow Creek Trail
Bass Lake Area • Rocky Creek Trail To Cascades • Best Summer Swim-And-Hike Combo
A lively, sometimes rugged creekside route leading to polished granite slabs and the cascades of Angel Falls.
Starting near the south end of Bass Lake, the Willow Creek Trail wastes no time climbing over boulders and weaving through brush along the water. Angel Falls makes a perfect turnaround spot, with pools and smooth rock to explore when flows allow. Wear sturdy shoes, expect to use your hands in a few spots, and avoid the edges when the creek is running high.
04
Best quick workout
Pincushion Peak Trail
Near North Fork • Steep Ridgeline Climb • Best For Cardio And Big Vistas
A short, steep grind up an exposed ridge with rewarding views over the San Joaquin River and surrounding foothills.
Locals treat Pincushion as their go-to training hill, thanks to its steady grade and easy access off Road 222. The climb is mostly switchbacks through chaparral, so start early or on cooler days and pack more water than you think you need. From the top, you can spot Bass Lake, the river canyon, and, on clear days, higher Sierra peaks in the distance.
05
Iconic national park outing
Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
South Entrance To Yosemite National Park • Sequoia Grove Trail Network • Best For First-Time Visitors
Well-maintained trails wind among towering giant sequoias, including famous trees just a short hike from the trailhead.
From Coarsegold, the drive up Highway 41 to Mariposa Grove feels like a natural extension of a day in the foothills. Once at the grove, you can choose from easy loops on firm paths or longer climbs to quieter clusters of massive trees. It is a popular spot, so aim for early morning or shoulder seasons if you prefer your giants with a little more solitude.
