Best alpine-feel escape
Howard Lake via Howard Corral Trail
Mendocino National Forest North Of Covelo • Forest Lake Climb • Classic Day Hike
A sustained forest climb to a quiet high-country lake that feels far removed from the valley floor.
From the Howard Corral trailhead, the route climbs steadily through mixed conifer forest before easing off near Howard Lake. The payoff is a small, sheltered lake ringed by trees, with room to wander along the shore or picnic in the shade. Expect some rocky, rutted driving on the way in and bring layers—the air up here runs cooler than in Covelo.

Steep ridge workout
Traveler's Home Trail
Foothills Southeast Of Covelo • Steep Ridge Trail • Best Workout View
A short but punchy climb that rewards you with big views over the Round Valley and surrounding forest.
Traveler's Home is a local choice when you want to earn your scenery in a couple of miles rather than an all-day outing. The grade turns up quickly, with sections of loose dirt and rock that feel more like a mountain goat track than a stroll. Go early on hot days, and plan to linger at the top where the open ridgeline gives you wide-angle views back toward Covelo.

Most family-friendly
Hammerhorn Lake and Ridge Trail
Hammerhorn Lake Recreation Area • Lakeside Loop With Optional Ridge • Best For Families
A mellow lakeside walk with optional side trips onto nearby ridges for hikers who want more elevation.
Hammerhorn Lake is small enough to feel approachable but big enough to keep kids and casual hikers interested the whole way around. A well-used path rings the shoreline, with plenty of spots to stop for snacks, watch for wildlife, or cool your feet. More ambitious hikers can tack on spur trails heading toward the surrounding ridges for higher views over the forested basin.

Coolest summer option
Black Butte River Trail
Black Butte River Canyon East Of Town • Shaded River Canyon Walk • Hot-Day Escape
A mostly shaded route along the Black Butte River, with clear pools and gravel bars that invite lingering.
Following the river through a narrow canyon, this trail offers frequent access to the water, making it a natural pick when valley temperatures spike. The tread can be rocky and narrow in places, but the grade stays gentle enough for most reasonably fit hikers. Bring sandals or water shoes if you plan to wade, and expect patchy cell service once you drop into the canyon.

Best backcountry adventure
Ides Cove to North Yolla Bolly Lake
Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness Backcountry • Remote Alpine Wilderness Route • Overnight Adventure
A rugged route into high, wild country with big views and a classic mountain lake camp.
Reaching the Ides Cove area from Covelo takes time on forest roads, but the trail quickly rewards the effort with open ridges and sweeping vistas over the Yolla Bolly peaks. The route is popular as a 1–2 night backpack, with North Yolla Bolly Lake offering a scenic, high-elevation camp ringed by rocky slopes. Expect primitive conditions: downed logs, faint tread in meadows, and changeable weather, so this one is best for experienced hikers comfortable navigating remote terrain.
