01
Best overall pick
Sacramento River Bend Area
North Of Red Bluff Near Bend • Wide-Open Riverside Blm Landscape • Best Overall Hiking Pick
A broad swath of public land above the Sacramento River with rolling trails, big sky, and reliable views.
This is where many locals go when they say they’re “going for a hike by the river.” Multiple trailheads and loops let you choose anything from a mellow hour-long stroll to a longer outing that traces the bluffs above the water. Expect open grasslands, scattered oaks, winter raptors, and sunsets that make the drive from Dales feel very short.
02
Easiest access from town
Red Bluff Recreation Area & River Trails
Along The Sacramento River In Red Bluff • In-Town Riverfront Trail System • Best Easy Walk Close To Town
A network of mostly gentle riverside paths ideal for quick walks, family outings, and after-work leg stretches.
If you want something low-commitment but still scenic, these river trails are hard to beat. The paths wind through cottonwoods and oaks with frequent river views, benches, and spots to watch salmon, geese, and the occasional osprey. It’s an easy place to build in a walk before groceries or dinner in Red Bluff without feeling like you sacrificed a “real” hike.
03
Best shoulder-season hike
Hog Lake Plateau Recreation Area
East Of Dales Toward Paynes Creek • Open Grassland And Basalt Plateau • Best Spring Wildflower Hike
A windswept basin and rim country with seasonal water, big horizons, and a pleasantly remote feel.
Hog Lake’s loop-style trails are especially appealing in spring, when the grass is green, the seasonal lake has water, and wildflowers dot the basalt outcrops. The walking is mostly moderate, but the landscape feels surprisingly wild thanks to the lack of development and long views out over the plateau. Bring sun protection and plenty of water—there’s almost no shade once you leave the parking area.
04
Best mountain day trip
Lassen Volcanic National Park
High Country East Of Dales In The Cascades • Alpine National Park With Volcanic Peaks • Best Full-Day Mountain Escape
A classic Northern California park with lakes, lava flows, and summit trails that reward the drive from the valley.
From Dales, Lassen makes an excellent full-day outing when the roads and high trails are open. You can keep things easy with lake loops around Manzanita Lake or Bumpass Hell’s boardwalks, or push higher on more strenuous summit and ridge hikes. Cooler temperatures, conifer forests, and views of steaming vents offer a sharp contrast to the hot, open country around the Sacramento River.
05
Most rugged adventure
Ishi Wilderness
Remote Canyonlands Southeast Of Dales • Rugged Wilderness Canyons And Oak Woodland • Best For Seasoned Backcountry Hikers
A remote, lightly developed wilderness of deep canyons, lava outcrops, and sparse trails for those who like their hikes wild.
The Ishi Wilderness is not a casual stroll, but it’s one of the more unique landscapes within striking distance of Dales. Trails and old routes drop from oak-dotted rims into steep canyons carved by Deer and Mill Creeks, with rough footing and minimal signage in places. Go only if you’re comfortable with route-finding, carry extra water, and treat it as a true backcountry experience rather than a park-style day hike.
