01
Best overall pick
Caswell Memorial State Park
South Of Ripon Along The Stanislaus River • Shady Riverside State Park • Best All-Around Nature Escape
A compact network of flat dirt paths leads through mature riparian forest to quiet bends of the Stanislaus River.
Caswell is one of the last remaining examples of valley oak riparian woodland in the Central Valley, and the trails feel surprisingly wild given the short drive from Del Rio. Loops are easy to combine for one to three miles of walking, with plenty of side paths to the water. Go early or on weekdays for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds at the river access points.
02
Best in-town river walk
Tuolumne River Regional Park
West Modesto River Corridor • Urban Riverfront Greenway • Best For Relaxed Strolls
A paved and dirt path system follows the Tuolumne River past picnic areas, open fields, and pockets of restored habitat.
If you want a mellow walk without committing to a full day out, this park string is hard to beat. You can choose short out-and-back stretches or link longer segments for several miles, with river overlooks and open lawns where kids can roam. Expect bikes, joggers, and dog walkers, but also stretches where the river and cottonwoods take over the soundscape.
03
Most scenic day trip
Knights Ferry Recreation Area
East Of Oakdale In The Sierra Foothills • Historic Riverside Canyon • Best For Views And Variety
Well-trodden riverside trails wind past a historic covered bridge, basalt outcrops, and lively riffles on the Stanislaus River.
Knights Ferry feels like a mini foothills escape, with more relief and scenery than most valley walks while still being an easy drive from Del Rio. Trails on both sides of the river offer options, from short rambles to longer out-and-back hikes that climb gently above the water for wide canyon views. Spring brings wildflowers and kayakers; in fall, look for salmon moving upstream below the bridge.
04
Best neighborhood stretch-your-legs walk
Dry Creek Regional Park & Trail
North Modesto Greenbelt • Neighborhood Creek Corridor • Best For Regular Routine Walks
A mostly level path traces Dry Creek through parks, sports fields, and pockets of riparian vegetation on the north side of Modesto.
For many Del Rio residents, this is the go-to spot for a quick walk, jog, or casual bike ride. The trail feels suburban but still finds its way into surprisingly green stretches along the creek, with benches and side paths to the water. It is ideal when you want time outside without dealing with park entrance fees or a longer drive.
05
Best for bird watching
San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge
Near Vernalis And The Delta Edge • Quiet Wildlife Refuge • Best For Quiet Nature Walks
Short loop trails and levee walks cut through restored wetlands and riparian habitat where thousands of birds gather seasonally.
This refuge offers a different feel from the more developed parks closer to Modesto, with a focus on wildlife and open space. Trails are generally flat and straightforward but reward slow walking and frequent stops to scan ponds, fields, and tree lines. Bring binoculars if you have them, and expect a very quiet scene, especially at sunrise or near sunset.
