Best overall pick
Wind Wolves Preserve
Southwest Of Delano Off I-5 • Expansive Conservation Preserve • Best All-Around Day Trip
Rolling hills, seasonal wildflowers, and wide-open canyon trails make Wind Wolves the most rewarding day hike within easy reach of Delano.
About an hour’s drive southwest, Wind Wolves feels surprisingly remote once you leave the freeway behind. The San Emigdio Canyon area offers mellow, mostly flat trails along the creek, with longer routes climbing into oak-studded hills if you want more elevation. Come in spring for carpets of wildflowers and cool air, or on winter mornings when the light is soft and the preserve is pleasantly quiet.
02
Best big-tree walk
Trail of 100 Giants
Western Sierra Above Kern River Valley • Shaded Giant Sequoia Grove • Iconic Weekend Outing
A short, mostly level loop through massive sequoias turns this into an easy but unforgettable mountain escape from the valley heat.
When you want cooler air and a totally different landscape, head northeast into the Sequoia National Forest for the Trail of 100 Giants. The paved and packed-dirt loop meanders through towering sequoias, with plenty of benches and side spurs if you want to linger and explore. It’s a longer drive from Delano, so pair it with a picnic or a stop in the Kern River Valley and treat it as a full-day mountain trip.

Best riverfront mileage
Kern River Parkway Trail
Bakersfield River Corridor • Urban Riverfront Trail System • Go-To Fitness Route
This long paved path along the Kern River is ideal for walkers who want reliable mileage, easy access, and a bit of nature without leaving the city.
Roughly 30–40 minutes south of Delano, the Kern River Parkway strings together parks, ponds, and river views across Bakersfield. You can hop on at popular access points like The Park at River Walk and piece together out-and-back walks that fit your schedule. Expect bikes, runners, and families, but also stretches where you can watch herons and egrets and forget you’re so close to town.
04
Best quick nature escape
Panorama Vista Preserve
Bluffs Northeast Of Bakersfield • Community Nature Preserve • Quick In-And-Out Hike
A compact network of dirt paths above the Kern River offers easy loops with big-sky views that work perfectly before or after a trip to Bakersfield.
Perched above the river on the east side of Bakersfield, Panorama Vista is where locals go when they want dirt underfoot but only have an hour to spare. The trails roll gently across restored grassland and down toward the river, with views over orchards, the city, and distant hills. Go early or late in the day for softer light, cooler temperatures, and a better chance of spotting hawks riding the thermals along the bluffs.

Best family-friendly option
Hart Memorial Park & Kern River Hills
Foothills Northeast Of Bakersfield • Classic River Park With Nearby Hill Trails • Best Picnic-And-Hike Combo
Lakes, shaded lawns, and nearby foothill paths make Hart Park an easy choice when you want a relaxed outing that can still include a real walk.
Set along the Kern River, Hart Park is a local standby with plenty of parking, bathrooms, and picnic areas, plus access to dirt roads and paths in the surrounding hills. You can keep it casual with a flat stroll along the water or head toward the hills for short but steeper climbs and broader views back over the valley. It’s a practical pick for mixed groups where some people want to hike while others are happier grilling or watching the ducks.
