Classic alpine escape
Lake Sabrina Trail
Bishop Creek – Lake Sabrina • High-Elevation Alpine Lakes And Granite Basins • Classic Eastern Sierra Experience
A postcard-perfect alpine lake trail with options from mellow shoreline wandering to demanding climbs into the Sabrina Basin.
From Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek, the drive up to Lake Sabrina is part of the reward, with the road climbing quickly into cool pine forest and big canyon views. Once at the lake, you can keep things easy with a shoreline leg-stretcher or follow the main trail into Sabrina Basin for a half- or full-day of switchbacks, waterfalls, and high-country lakes. Expect cooler temperatures, thinner air, and true mountain weather, even when it feels hot back in the valley.

Best half-day alpine hike
Piute Pass via North Lake
Bishop Creek – North Lake • Forest And Meadow Trail To Broad High Pass • Scenic Climb With Big Payoff
A steady but reasonable climb from North Lake to Piute Pass delivers sweeping views over both the Owens Valley and the high plateau beyond.
North Lake sits just above Lake Sabrina and feels a bit quieter, with a compact trailhead and instant immersion in the trees. The Piute Pass trail gains elevation at a steady pace, passing creeks, cascades, and small meadows before the terrain opens up into classic Sierra granite and tarns. Even if you turn around before the pass proper, you get a big-mountain feel without committing to an all-day epic.

Big-day high-country route
Bishop Pass via South Lake
Bishop Creek – South Lake • High Sierra Basin And Pass With Multiple Lakes • Ambitious All-Day Adventure
A challenging but spectacular route linking a chain of turquoise lakes on the way to one of the Eastern Sierra’s classic high passes.
Starting from South Lake, this trail wastes no time in delivering scenery, weaving past Inconsolable, Saddlerock, and Bishop Lakes on the way toward Bishop Pass. It is a longer, steeper outing than the other Bishop Creek options, so it suits fit hikers who are comfortable with altitude and all-day efforts. Time it for a clear day and you are rewarded with enormous views over the Palisades and a real sense of being deep in the high country, yet you are back down to Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek by evening if you start early.

Best low-key evening wander
Buttermilk Country Trails
Buttermilk Foothills West Of Bishop • Desert Foothill Paths Through Granite Boulders • Sunset And Shoulder-Season Pick
Short, informal paths thread between house-sized boulders and sagebrush with huge views back to the Sierra wall.
Just a short drive west of Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek, the Buttermilks are famous with climbers but also make a great casual hiking zone. There are no formal loop trails; instead you follow old dirt tracks and use paths to wander among the boulders, climb low knolls, and watch the light change on the peaks. It is a perfect place for a relaxed sunset walk, cool-weather outing, or a stretch-your-legs stop when the high passes are still snowed in.

Owens River Gorge & Chalk Bluff
Owens River Gorge North Of Bishop • River Gorge And Rim Walking In High Desert • Year-Round Nearby Escape
Easy to moderate paths along the Owens River and the rim of Chalk Bluff offer quiet walking and big-sky views without a long drive.
Head north from Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek and you are quickly in open desert, with side roads dropping down toward the Owens River and the gorge. Short hikes here follow old roads and footpaths along the water, or trace the edge of Chalk Bluff for panoramic looks back toward the Sierra and down into the canyon. It is a good choice for cooler seasons or windy days when you want to stay lower, stretch your legs, and still feel connected to the landscape.
