Iconic giant sequoia walk
General Grant Tree Trail
Grant Grove Area, Kings Canyon National Park • Giant Sequoia Grove Loop • Best First-Stop Hike
A short, gently graded loop to one of the largest trees on earth, perfect for stretching your legs after the drive up from the valley.
Starting from the Grant Grove Village parking area, this paved loop winds through dense sequoia forest to the massive General Grant Tree and several other named giants. The grade is mild and the route is well signed, so it works for mixed groups and anyone still acclimating to the elevation. Go early or near sunset for cooler temperatures and quieter moments under the canopy.
02
Classic waterfall hike
Tokopah Falls Trail
Lodgepole Area, Sequoia National Park • Riverside Mountain Trail • Best For Summer Afternoons
A moderate out-and-back along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River to a granite-walled waterfall amphitheater.
From the Lodgepole Campground bridge, the trail follows the river through open granite and pockets of forest with steady but manageable elevation gain. The payoff is the tall, sliding cascade of Tokopah Falls framed by high Sierra walls, especially impressive in late spring and early summer. Pack layers, as afternoon clouds and cool spray near the falls can make it feel much cooler than the trailhead temperature.
03
Sequoia grove immersion
Congress Trail
Giant Forest, Sequoia National Park • Forest Loop Through Giant Sequoias • Best For Unhurried Exploring
A longer, quieter loop branching from the General Sherman Tree area into some of the park's most impressive sequoia stands.
After visiting the General Sherman Tree, continue onto the Congress Trail to leave most of the crowds behind and wander among clusters of enormous trunks. The mostly paved and well-graded path loops past named trees like the President and the Senate, with side spurs into hushed groves off the main route. Plan time to stop often, as the scale of the trees rewards slow, curious walking rather than rushing the loop.
04
Closest nature escape
Kaweah Oaks Preserve
Valley Floor East Of Visalia • Valley Oak Woodland Preserve • Best Quick Local Walk
A network of short, mostly flat paths weaving through old-growth valley oaks, seasonal creeks, and grassland just down the road from farm country.
For days when you do not want the full mountain drive, Kaweah Oaks offers shaded loops, birdlife, and spring wildflowers within easy reach of East Orosi. Trails are unpaved but gentle, making them good for families, new hikers, or evening strolls after work. Bring water and expect summer heat, as amenities are minimal and many stretches are exposed once you leave the thicker groves.
05
Best big-view summit
Big Baldy Trail
Between Grant Grove And Lodgepole On Generals Highway • Panoramic Summit Trail • Best For Half-Day Outings
A moderate ridge climb to a broad granite dome with sweeping views of the Great Western Divide and deep forested canyons.
The trail starts right off Generals Highway and climbs steadily through mixed conifer forest before breaking onto open granite slabs near the top. From the summit, you get a wide-open Sierra panorama that feels surprisingly remote given the short drive from the valley. Start early in midsummer, as much of the upper stretch is exposed and afternoon thunderstorms and haze can build quickly.
