01
Best in-town climb
Dragoon Gulch Trail
Hills Above Downtown Sonora • Oak-Woodland Loop With A Town Overlook • Quick Local Workout With A Payoff View
A short but steady climb from Sonora’s edge to a hilltop vista that feels surprisingly wild for being so close to town.
Dragoon Gulch is where locals go when they want real elevation gain without leaving town limits. The main loop winds through manzanita and oak, then tops out at a viewpoint that lays out Sonora’s rooftops and the surrounding foothills. Go early or late in the day for cooler temps and softer light on the ridges.
02
Best river canyon escape
Natural Bridges Trail
Between Vallecito And Parrotts Ferry Road • Shaded Canyon Walk To A Limestone Water Tunnel • Scenic Half-Day Outing For Strong Walkers
A short, steep hike drops into a cool limestone gorge where Coyote Creek carves a swimmable ‘natural bridge’ through the rock.
Expect a hot uphill return, but the payoff at the bottom is worth the effort: emerald water, sculpted rock, and a shady canyon that feels worlds away from Highway 4. Bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water, and be mindful of flows and temperatures if you plan to wade or swim. Parking is limited, so midweek or early-morning starts are your best bet.
03
Best bang-for-your-buck views
Tuolumne Table Mountain
Near Jamestown And Highway 108 • Steep Foothill Climb To A Flat Basalt Summit • Top Pick For Big Vistas Close To Town
A short, punchy climb leads to a broad, flat summit with sweeping views over New Melones Lake and the Sierra foothills.
The trail climbs quickly through grassland and scrub before easing onto the tabletop, where you can wander to different edges for changing panoramas. In spring, wildflowers dot the summit and the surrounding hills glow green; by summer it’s exposed and hot, so start at dawn if you can. There’s no shade or water on top, so pack sun protection and enough to drink.
04
Best relaxed lake loop
Pinecrest Lake National Recreation Trail
Pinecrest Lake Area Off Highway 108 • Classic Sierra Lakeshore Loop • Family-Friendly Alpine Stroll
A mostly gentle path circles a clear Sierra lake, mixing forest shade, granite outcrops, and frequent chances to drop to the water’s edge.
This loop is ideal when you want mountain air without committing to a big climb; you can hike the full circuit or turn around at any point. Expect crowds near the marina and day-use areas, but the far side of the lake quiets down and offers big views back toward the dam and surrounding peaks. It’s a great choice for mixed-ability groups, with plenty of spots to picnic or swim along the way.
05
Best giant-sequoia immersion
South Grove Trail, Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Highway 4, East Of Arnold • Forest Loop Through A Remote Sequoia Grove • All-Day Forest Escape For Committed Hikers
A longer, quieter loop that trades crowds for deep woods and extended time wandering among massive giant sequoias.
Compared to the park’s easier North Grove, the South Grove Trail feels more like a true backcountry walk, with long stretches of mixed conifer forest between clusters of towering sequoias. The distance and rolling terrain make it a solid workout, but the shade, birdlife, and sheer scale of the trees keep it engaging. Start unhurried, bring lunch, and treat it as a full, unhurried day in the woods.
