Best bayfront walk
San Francisco Bay Trail at Emeryville Marina
Emeryville Shoreline • Paved Waterfront Path • Easy In-Town Escape
A mellow out-and-back along the Emeryville waterfront with big Bay views and almost no elevation gain.
If you want fresh air without a long drive, this stretch of the Bay Trail is the obvious move. The wide paved path threads past marinas, pocket parks, and restored shoreline habitat, with constant views across to San Francisco and the Golden Gate. Go at sunset for glowing water and a city-skyline backdrop that feels far bigger than the distance you’ve walked.

Classic hill escape
Wildcat Gorge & Meadows Canyon Loop, Tilden Regional Park
Berkeley Hills Above Town • Classic East Bay Canyon Loop • Go-To Half-Day Hike
A varied loop that strings together creekside trail, open meadows, and oak-dotted hillsides just above Berkeley.
From Emeryville, it’s a short climb into Tilden, but it feels like you’ve left the city behind. This loop gives you a little bit of everything the park is known for: shaded stretches along Wildcat Creek, broad grassy slopes, and glimpses over the Bay on the higher sections. It’s a great choice when you want a true hike with moderate elevation, but not an all-day epic.
03
Most dramatic viewpoints
Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve
Oakland Hills Along Skyline • Open Ridge And Volcanic Geology • Best For Wide-Open Views
A network of looping trails over old volcanic terrain with sweeping views toward the Bay and Mount Diablo.
Sibley is where the East Bay hills show off their contours, with rolling ridges, quarry cuts, and signed stops that hint at the area’s volcanic past. Mix and match the Ridge and Volcanic Trails for a hike that alternates between big-sky viewpoints and quiet folded valleys. On clear days, the sightlines stretch from the bridges to the inland peaks, making it a favorite for locals who like their walks with a sense of scale.
04
Best redwood retreat
Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park
Oakland’S Redwood Corridor • Shady Redwood Forest Trails • Coolest Summer Escape
A cool, fragrant canyon of second-growth redwoods with plenty of options for loop hikes and longer rambles.
When Emeryville heats up, locals head for Redwood’s damp, shaded ravines. Trails like Stream, Mill, and French wind beneath towering trunks, with wooden bridges, ferns, and birdsong replacing city noise. You can keep it easy with a mostly level creekside stroll or link canyon and ridge trails into a more aerobic loop with the redwoods as your backdrop.
05
Quick hill workout
Claremont Canyon & Stonewall-Panoramic Trail
Above Claremont And Uc Berkeley • Steep Ridge To Big Vistas • Best Quick Workout
A short, steep climb that rewards the effort with punchy Bay panoramas right above the Berkeley–Oakland border.
If you only have an hour but still want your legs and lungs to notice, this is the route. The trail wastes no time gaining elevation, zigzagging through scrub and grassland to a high ridge above the Claremont neighborhood. From the top, you get a classic East Bay payoff: bridges, skyline, and the sweep of the Bay laid out almost directly below your feet.
