Closest to Foresta
Foresta Falls Trail
Foresta Area • Quiet Forest Waterfall Walk • Best Nearby Stroll
A short, lightly trafficked walk from the Foresta area down to a rocky cascade on Crane Creek.
If you want to stretch your legs without getting in the car, this is the go-to trail from Foresta. The path follows an old road grade through recovering forest before dropping to a boulder-lined pool and small waterfall that feels surprisingly wild given the easy access. Go early or near sunset for soft light on the granite and a good chance of having the spot to yourself.
02
Best forest creek hike
Carlon Falls Trail
Evergreen Road Corridor • Shaded Creekside Day Hike • Best For Hot Days
This gentle trail follows the South Fork of the Tuolumne River to a series of swim-friendly falls and pools.
A short drive west from Foresta, Carlon Falls offers a cooler, more intimate forest experience than many Yosemite valley hikes. The mostly mellow path traces the river through pines and dogwoods, with plenty of places to detour down to the water. In late spring and early summer the falls are at their fullest, while in late summer the calmer pools invite a refreshing dip.
03
Best Hetch Hetchy outing
Wapama Falls Trail
Hetch Hetchy Reservoir • Lakeside Waterfall Trail • Best Moderate Adventure
A rolling trail along the granite walls of Hetch Hetchy leading to a powerful waterfall and misty bridge crossings.
From Foresta, Hetch Hetchy is an underused gateway to classic Yosemite scenery with fewer crowds. The Wapama Falls Trail skirts the shoreline, passing through a tunnel and across sturdy bridges as the views of the reservoir and sheer cliffs expand. Expect some sun exposure and a few rocky stretches, but the payoff is standing in the spray at the base of one of the park’s most underrated falls.
04
Iconic waterfall climb
Mist Trail to Vernal Fall
Yosemite Valley • Steep Stone-Stair Waterfall Hike • Classic Yosemite Must-Do
A steep but thrilling climb up stone steps beside the Merced River to the brink of thundering Vernal Fall.
Once you have made the scenic drive from Foresta down to Yosemite Valley, the Mist Trail is the marquee outing for first-time visitors and returners alike. Spring and early summer bring roaring water and a soaking mist that can feel like a rainstorm on the tight switchbacks, so expect wet steps and bring a light shell. Turn around at the top of Vernal Fall for a satisfying half-day hike, or continue toward Nevada Fall if you are up for a longer push.
05
Best big-view rim hike
Taft Point & Sentinel Dome Loop
Glacier Point Road High Country • Panoramic Rim And Dome Loop • Best For Sunset Views
A relatively short loop that links airy cliffs above Yosemite Valley with a dome-top panorama of the surrounding peaks.
From the Glacier Point Road turnoff, reachable from Foresta when the road is open in the snow-free months, this loop packs an outsized scenic punch. Taft Point offers vertigo-inducing views straight down to the valley floor, while Sentinel Dome gives a 360-degree sweep over Half Dome, the Clark Range, and distant Sierra ridges. Start in the late afternoon, bring a headlamp, and you can linger for an unforgettable sunset without committing to a long or technical hike.
