Iconic local climb
Pincushion Peak Trail
Near Friant And Millerton Lake Dam • Steep Summit Trail With Big Lake Views • Go-To Sunrise And Workout Hike
A short, relentlessly steep trail that rewards the effort with big views over Millerton Lake and the San Joaquin River.
From the trailhead near the dam, the route shoots straight up a rocky spine, gaining serious elevation in just over a mile. Locals use it as a fitness test piece and a sunrise ritual, with wide-open vistas toward the Sierra and back over Fresno’s lights. Go early in hot weather—there’s almost no shade and the slope feels every degree.

Best longer outing
San Joaquin River Trail from Finegold Bay
North Shore Of Millerton Lake • Rolling Singletrack Along The River Canyon • Scenic Endurance Hike
A longer, undulating trail that follows the river canyon toward the High Sierra, with constant lake and foothill views.
Starting from the Finegold Bay side of Millerton, this stretch of the San Joaquin River Trail feels surprisingly remote for being so close to town. The narrow path winds in and out of small drainages, with wildflowers in spring and golden grasslands later in the year. Plan this one when you want a half-day or longer hike and pack extra water—once you leave the lot, there are no services and very little shade.
03
Easiest access from town
Lewis S. Eaton Trail
San Joaquin River Parkway, North Fresno • Wide Paved Riverfront Path • Relaxed Walk And Bike-Friendly Route
A flat, paved path that traces the river bluffs, perfect for easy walks, stroller runs, and quick evening miles from Fort Washington.
This is the closest true ‘hike’ most Fort Washington residents have, with multiple access points not far from the golf course and surrounding neighborhoods. The wide path makes it simple to bring kids, dogs, or bikes, while side views open to the river, bluffs, and distant foothills. It’s ideal when you want fresh air and movement without a long drive or steep climbing.
04
Shoreline favorite
Winchell Cove Trail
South Side Of Millerton Lake • Moderate Lakeside Loop • Weekend Escape Close To Town
A gently rolling trail that loops along coves and inlets on Millerton’s south shore, offering water views and a quieter feel than the main marina.
The Winchell Cove area gives you that ‘lake getaway’ vibe without committing to a long mountain drive. The trail dips in and out of small bays, with oak trees, rocky outcrops, and plenty of spots to pause and look across the water. It’s a great choice for a moderate weekend hike when you want a few hours on your feet and a picnic afterwards by the shore.
05
Wildflower ridge walk
Pa'san Ridge Trail
Foothills Above Millerton Lake • Panoramic Ridge And Oak-Woodland Trail • Spring And Sunset Pick
A looping ridge trail that blends open views, rolling climbs, and seasonal wildflowers in the low foothills above the lake.
Pa'san Ridge feels like a sampler of the Sierra foothills, with stretches through oak woodland opening onto broad ridgelines and big sky. In spring, grasses are green and wildflowers light up the slopes, while cooler months bring crisp air and clearer vistas. Time it for late afternoon and you’ll finish with sunset colors over Millerton and the river canyon.
