The trail wastes no time gaining elevation, so you are rewarded quickly with views back over Friant, the dam, and the San Joaquin River canyon. Go early in hot weather—there is little shade but sunrise and sunset light here are hard to beat.

This section of the San Joaquin River Trail feels wild yet is still an easy drive from Friant. Starting near Sky Harbor, the path undulates along the hillsides above the river, mixing open slopes, scattered oaks, and big lake vistas. It is ideal when you want more mileage without extreme climbing, and you can turn around whenever you are ready to head back.

Winchell Cove is a forgiving hike that still feels rewarding, tracing coves and small inlets along the lake’s south shore. The grade is modest and the tread is friendly, making it a good choice for mixed groups or a relaxed evening walk. In spring, the surrounding foothills often green up and bloom, turning the route into a colorful corridor above the water.

A bit farther from Friant, Pa'san Ridge feels like a full getaway without a long drive into the high Sierra. The loop offers classic foothill scenery—scattered oaks, rocky outcrops, and frequent glimpses of the San Joaquin far below. Expect a moderate workout, and bring water and sun protection, as the open stretches can be exposed on warm days.

It is a good choice when Millerton feels busy and you want a more laid-back outing without technical terrain.
