Classic desert oasis
Borrego Palm Canyon Trail
Anza-Borrego Near Borrego Springs • Palm Oasis Canyon Hike • Best All-Around Desert Hike
A well-marked wash leads to a lush fan-palm oasis tucked beneath steep, rocky canyon walls.
This is the go-to introduction to Anza-Borrego for Imperial Valley hikers, with a clear path that gradually follows the sandy canyon bottom toward a year-round palm grove. In a good rain year, seasonal pools and a small stream add extra appeal, and bighorn sheep are often spotted on the slopes above. Start early on warm days, bring plenty of water, and enjoy the easy navigation and big payoff at the shaded oasis.

The Slot Trail
Anza-Borrego North Of Borrego Springs • Narrow Slot Canyon Walk • Best For Photo-Friendly Exploring
A short loop drops into a twisting slot canyon where sandstone walls squeeze close and filter the desert light.
The Slot offers a compact but unforgettable walk through sculpted, narrow passageways that feel a world away from the flat fields around Heber. Most of the route is straightforward, but you’ll need to duck under rock spans and negotiate a few tight sections, so it’s best for hikers comfortable with a bit of scrambling. Go early or on a weekday to avoid crowds, and always skip slot canyons if storms are in the forecast.

Mountain Palm Springs Loop Trails
Southern Anza-Borrego Off Highway S2 • Rolling Desert Loop With Multiple Oases • Best For A Relaxed Half-Day Outing
Interconnected loops wander between several small palm canyons with wide views over the Carrizo Badlands.
Mountain Palm Springs is ideal when you want options: several linked trails allow you to tailor the distance, from quick out-and-backs to a longer loop visiting multiple groves. Gentle climbs and soft sand make it a pleasant workout without feeling punishing, and the palms offer pockets of shade for breaks. It’s a good choice for mixed groups who want a taste of desert backcountry without committing to a big climb.

Hidden-feeling canyon
Canyon Sin Nombre
Anza-Borrego South Entrance Near I-8 • Remote Mudhill And Slot Canyon Hike • Best For Adventurous Hikers
Walk up a broad dirt wash and duck into side slots carved into pale mudstone, far from any town lights.
Canyon Sin Nombre feels surprisingly wild given how close it sits to Interstate 8, with eroded mudhills, side canyons, and occasional tight passages to explore on foot. High-clearance vehicles can drive farther into the canyon, but many hikers simply park where the road turns rough and continue up the wash. Navigation is mostly by sight, so carry a map or GPS, check road and weather conditions in advance, and treat this as a choose-your-own-distance desert ramble.

Birding and shoreline views
Rock Hill Trail, Sonny Bono Salton Sea NWR
Southeast Shore Of The Salton Sea • Easy Wildlife Refuge Path • Best For Sunset And Birdwatching
A short, mostly level trail climbs a low hill and levees overlooking marshes, fields, and the Salton Sea.
When you want a gentle walk more than a workout, the Rock Hill area delivers big birdlife and broad views for minimal effort. The path is mostly flat, with benches and viewpoints that make it friendly for kids and casual strollers, especially during the cooler months when migratory birds are thick on the ponds. Bring binoculars, expect some typical Salton Sea smells, and time your visit for late afternoon light over the water.
