Howard Ranch Trail at Rancho Seco Recreation Area
Rancho Seco Recreation Area • Wide Open Ranchland Loop • Best Nearby Half-Day Hike
A gently rolling out-and-back across open ranch country with long views, seasonal wildflowers, and plenty of room to roam.
Starting just east of the old Rancho Seco towers, this trail follows a ranch road through golden grasslands, scattered oaks, and quiet stock ponds. In spring, the route pops with wildflowers and you’re likely to spot sandhill cranes, hawks, and grazing cattle in the distance. There’s almost no shade, so locals time it for cool mornings, breezy afternoons, or winter sun walks.

Best for bird-watchers
Cosumnes River Preserve – River Walk & Wetlands Trails
West Of Herald Near Galt • Riparian Wetland Wildlife Refuge • Best For Bird-Watching And Kids
Easy boardwalks and levee paths weave through wetlands and along the Cosumnes River, with close-up views of birds and big valley skies.
This preserve is where many Herald locals go when they want a gentle walk with plenty to look at and not much elevation gain. Short loops and out-and-backs link ponds, sloughs, and oak gallery forest, making it an easy place to tailor the distance to your group. Go early or near sunset for the best bird activity and reflections on the water, especially during winter migrations.

Shaded river escape
Mokelumne River Day Use Area – Coast to Crest Segment
Below Camanche Dam On Mokelumne River • Rocky River Canyon Path • Best Summer River Escape
A narrow trail follows the Mokelumne’s cool, rocky corridor with boulder outcrops, river views, and pockets of welcome shade.
Downstream of Camanche Dam, the Mokelumne cuts a low canyon that feels surprisingly wild given how close it is to farm country. The trail undulates above the river, ducking through oaks and buckeye, with side paths to gravel bars where anglers and picnickers spread out. It’s a favorite on hot days, when a breeze off the water and quick toe-dip breaks make the miles go down easy.

Foothill lake wander
Lake Camanche South Shore Trails
Foothills East Of Galt • Rolling Foothill Lakeside Trails • Best Mellow Foothill Ramble
Undulating paths trace the shoreline and low hills above Lake Camanche, mixing water views, oak groves, and classic foothill scenery.
South Shore offers a patchwork of unofficial and signed routes, so you can put together anything from a short leg-stretcher to a longer loop. Expect open grassland, scattered blue oaks, and quiet coves where you can sit and watch boats and birds move across the reservoir. It’s a good step up from flat valley walks without committing to a big mountain climb.
05
All-day trail network
Folsom Lake State Recreation Area – Beeks Bight Trails
North Of Folsom On Folsom Lake • Big Reservoir Multi-Use Trail Network • Best All-Around Day On The Trail
A web of shoreline and bluff-top trails lets you choose everything from short out-and-backs to longer loops with changing views of Folsom Lake.
From the Beeks Bight area, you can follow singletrack and wider paths that snake along inlets, climb to low viewpoints, and dip back to the water’s edge. The mix of granite outcrops, chaparral, and open oak woodland feels more Sierra foothill than valley, making it a satisfying day trip from Herald. Go when the lake is lower for broad beaches and rock gardens, or in spring for greener hills and cooler temperatures.
