01
Best overall hill escape
Fernandez Ranch
Between Hercules And Martinez • Oak‑Dotted Ranchland Preserve • Closest True Backcountry Feel
A short drive from Hercules, Fernandez Ranch delivers classic East Bay hill country with shady creeks and open ridges in a compact, hikeable package.
The main loop climbs gently from the trailhead into broad, grassy hills with big sky and views toward the Carquinez Strait. You can keep it mellow on the Windmill and Rail Fence trails or add a bit of climb on the Whipsnake or Woodland for more solitude and wider vistas. In spring the slopes explode with wildflowers, while winter and early mornings bring fog drifting through the oaks.
02
Best bayside walk
Point Pinole Regional Shoreline
Shoreline Between Pinole And Richmond • Breezy Waterfront Park With Wide Paths • Best For Relaxed Shoreline Mileage
Point Pinole offers long, mostly flat trails through eucalyptus groves and along San Pablo Bay, ideal for easy hikes with big water views.
From the main parking area, you can wander out along the Bay View Trail to the old fishing pier and feel the wind coming straight off the water. Side paths peel into quiet coves, marsh overlooks, and picnic meadows, so it’s easy to tailor a short leg‑stretcher or a longer loop. It’s a favorite for locals who want a real workout on foot without much elevation gain and with plenty of room to spread out.
03
Best for strait and bridge views
Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline
Ridge Above Port Costa And Crockett • Ridgetop And Canyon Trail Network • Best For Big Vistas In Under Half A Day
This park strings together high ridges and steep little canyons, with trails that look straight down onto the Carquinez Strait and its bridges.
Start from the Bull Valley or Crockett trailheads to climb quickly into open ridgelines, where the water, train lines, and refineries create a dramatic working‑Bay backdrop. Trails like the Bull Valley and Carquinez Scenic loops mix exposed stretches with pockets of shade, so bring sun protection on clear days. The terrain feels surprisingly wild given how close you are to town, and you can adjust distance easily by linking loops.
04
Best rolling‑hills workout
Crockett Hills Regional Park
Hills Above Crockett • Steep Grassland And Oak Hillside Park • Best For Hikers Who Like Some Climb
Crockett Hills stacks a series of punchy climbs and descents into a compact park, rewarding the effort with sweeping views over the strait and hills.
From the Crockett Ranch Staging Area, you can head out on wide ranch roads and narrower singletrack that weave through golden slopes and oak pockets. The tree cover is patchy, so you’ll spend plenty of time in the sun, but that exposure is what opens up the long‑range views toward Mount Tam, the bridges, and the refineries. It’s a satisfying option when you want a shorter outing that still feels like a real workout.
05
Best all‑day trail network
Wildcat Canyon Regional Park
Ridges Above Richmond And El Cerrito • Expansive Ridge‑And‑Canyon Open Space • Best For Longer Exploratory Hikes
Wildcat Canyon offers miles of interlocking fire roads and trails, from creekside strolls to ridge walks with huge views toward San Francisco Bay.
Accessed most easily from the Richmond side, the park lets you climb gradually out of the neighborhoods onto Wildcat Canyon’s rolling spine. Once on the ridges, you can follow long arcs of trail toward Inspiration Point or loop back on side canyons and smaller paths that feel surprisingly quiet for being so close to the city. It’s the place to go when you have a few hours and want room to wander without repeating the same short loop.
