Big-view classic
Suicide Rock via Deer Springs Trail
Deer Springs Trailhead On Ca-243 • Granite Overlook Trek • Iconic Idyllwild Viewpoint
A steady climb through tall pines to one of Idyllwild’s most dramatic granite perches.
This out-and-back route winds up well-graded switchbacks, trading roadside noise for birdsong and the smell of Jeffrey pines within the first mile. The payoff is a broad granite ledge with sweeping views across the canyon and up toward Tahquitz and the higher San Jacinto peaks. Start early for cooler temps and easier parking, and be ready to linger at the top—this is one of those viewpoints that’s hard to leave.

Easiest entry point
Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail
Tahquitz View Drive Trailhead • Easy Forest Path • Best Mellow Warm-Up
Gentle grades, big boulders, and filtered views of Tahquitz Rock make this an easy favorite.
The Ernie Maxwell feels like a sampler platter of Idyllwild scenery: shady forest, scattered granite blocks, and occasional openings toward Tahquitz’s sheer face. The grade stays friendly, making it ideal for newer hikers, families, or anyone adjusting to the elevation. Do it as a simple out-and-back from the lower trailhead, or arrange a shuttle with friends to hike one-way up or down between town and Humber Park.

Local lung-burner
Devil's Slide Trail to Saddle Junction
Humber Park • Steep Mountain Trail • Best Permit-Only Classic
A stout series of switchbacks into the high country, opening up views with every turn.
From the edge of Humber Park, the Devil’s Slide climbs quickly through tall pines and manzanita, never quite easing up until you hit the broad clearing of Saddle Junction. The junction itself is a crossroads for the high-country network, with side trails heading off toward Tahquitz Peak, Marion Mountain, and San Jacinto. Treat this as a rewarding destination on its own or a launching point for longer adventures, and don’t forget to sort out the required day-use permit in advance during busier seasons.

Serious summit day
San Jacinto Peak via Marion Mountain Trail
Marion Mountain Campground Area • High-Elevation Summit Route • Best Big-Day Challenge
A demanding ascent straight into the alpine, finishing atop one of Southern California’s signature summits.
The Marion Mountain approach wastes no time, climbing steeply from the forested lower slopes into rockier, thinner-aired terrain. You’ll feel almost every foot of elevation gain, but the reward is a true mountain experience: sweeping vistas, rugged granite, and a summit panorama that takes in the desert, the Inland Empire, and distant ranges on a clear day. This is a route for prepared hikers—start early, pack extra water and layers, and give yourself a full day to enjoy the effort and the views.

Close-to-town favorite
Idyllwild South Loop
Near Downtown Idyllwild • Short Mixed-Terrain Loop • Best Close-To-Town Leg-Stretcher
A quick loop just above town that blends quiet neighborhood edges with classic forest singletrack.
The South Loop strings together a mix of trail and mellow road walking, giving you easy access to views without committing to a half-day outing. It’s a great choice for an evening leg-stretcher, a first stroll after arriving in town, or a shoulder-season walk when higher trails are still holding snow. Expect a bit of up and down, a handful of broad vistas, and the pleasant feeling of dipping in and out of the trees while never straying far from Idyllwild’s cafés and galleries.
