Best overall pick
Tomales Point Trail
Point Reyes National Seashore – Tomales Point • Wind-Exposed Coastal Bluff Hike • Best For Sweeping Ocean Views
An iconic out-and-back along the tip of Point Reyes with nonstop Pacific and Tomales Bay vistas.
Starting from Pierce Point Ranch, this trail follows a narrow peninsula with wide-open views and frequent tule elk sightings. The tread is straightforward but long and often windy, making it a rewarding half- or full-day outing. Go on a clear day to fully appreciate the headlands and distant beaches stretching in both directions.
02
Classic valley route
Bear Valley Trail to Coast Trail Junction
Bear Valley – Point Reyes Interior • Shaded Creekside Valley Hike • Best For First-Time Visitors
A gentle climb from the visitor center through lush forest and along a lively creek to the edge of the coast.
Bear Valley is the most popular gateway into the park for good reason: it’s close to Inverness, well signed, and forgiving on the legs. The trail meanders under bay and fir trees with occasional meadows, making it a comfortable choice in sun or fog. Continue to the Coast Trail junction for a satisfying moderate day with a real sense of reaching the outer coastline.
03
Closest to town
Inverness Ridge Trail
Inverness Ridge Above Town • Forest Ridge Walk With Bay Views • Best For Quick Local Escape
A rolling ridge-top path offering pockets of Tomales Bay views just minutes above Inverness neighborhoods.
This trail feels distinctly local, threading through mixed forest along the spine of Inverness Ridge. Short access paths from residential streets lead quickly into quiet woods where you can hear wind in the trees more than road noise. It’s ideal for a shorter outing or evening walk when you want a hike without committing to a long drive deeper into the park.
04
Scenic estuary wander
Estero Trail to Drakes Estero Overlook
Point Reyes National Seashore – Estero Area • Quiet Pastoral Estuary Hike • Best For Birdwatching And Solitude
A mellow route over grassy hills and past ranchlands to broad views over Drakes Estero and tidal flats.
The Estero Trail has a softer, more pastoral feel than the rugged headlands, with rolling terrain and big open skies. Along the way you’ll pass grazing cattle, seasonal wildflowers, and marshes that draw in raptors and shorebirds. The overlook above Drakes Estero is a peaceful spot to linger, especially in the late afternoon when the light plays across the water channels.
05
Short coastal showstopper
Chimney Rock Trail
Point Reyes Headlands Near Lighthouse • Short Dramatic Cliffside Walk • Best Quick Coastal Drama
A brief but dramatic headland walk with cliff-edge views, seasonal wildflowers, and a good chance to spot elephant seals below.
From the small parking area near the end of the Point Reyes Headlands road, this trail heads straight out toward the ocean along a narrow peninsula. The distance is modest, but the scenery is big: steep cliffs, crashing surf, and, in spring, slopes carpeted with wildflowers. It’s an excellent choice when you want maximum payoff for minimal hiking time, especially paired with a lighthouse visit.
