01
Best easy walk from town
Duarte Recreational Trail
Duarte Foothills • Paved Greenway With Mountain Views • Relaxed Everyday Option
A flat, well-kept path that runs along the base of the foothills and is ideal for casual walks, jogs, and bike rides close to Irwindale.
If you want something close and low-key, this is the easiest way to get a bit of nature without committing to a big hike. The trail parallels residential streets but still offers wide-open views of the San Gabriels and plenty of room to spread out. Go at sunrise or sunset for cooler temperatures and the best light on the mountains.
02
Best shaded waterfall hike
Monrovia Canyon Falls Trail
Monrovia Canyon Park • Shaded Canyon Waterfall Trail • Family-Friendly Favorite
A gently climbing canyon path through oaks and sycamores that ends at a charming waterfall, great for newer hikers and kids.
Monrovia Canyon Park feels surprisingly wild for being so close to town, with a cool creek, birdlife, and dense tree cover most of the way. The climb to the falls is steady but manageable, and there are benches and railings where you need them. It is a great choice on warmer days when you want shade and running water without a long drive into the mountains.
03
Most popular canyon outing
Eaton Canyon Falls Trail
Pasadena Foothills • Classic Wash And Waterfall Hike • Crowd-Pleasing Pick
A busy but rewarding route up a broad wash and into a narrowing canyon that finishes at a photogenic waterfall and pool.
Start from the nature center and follow the sandy wash toward the mountains, then weave into the narrowing canyon where the walls close in and the air cools. Expect a few shallow creek crossings and some rock-hopping near the end, especially after winter rains. Go early on weekends to beat the heat and the crowds, and pack plenty of water—there’s very little shade on the approach.
04
Best full-day adventure
Bridge to Nowhere via East Fork Trail
San Gabriel Mountains Above Azusa • Rugged River Gorge Trek • Big-Mile Weekend Mission
A longer, rockier hike that follows the East Fork of the San Gabriel River to an isolated concrete bridge deep in the canyon.
This is the go-to choice when you want something that feels truly remote without driving hours from Irwindale. The route involves multiple river crossings, stretches of rocky riverbed, and some minor route-finding, so it’s best for hikers who are comfortable with uneven terrain and getting their feet wet. Start early, check conditions ahead of time, and treat it as an all-day outing with extra food, water, and sun protection.
05
Best quick climb for views
Sunset Bench via Lower Clamshell Trail
Foothills Above Duarte • Steep Fire Road Ridge Hike • After-Work Workout
A short but hilly fire road climb that rewards you with wide views over the San Gabriel Valley and a quiet bench to take it all in.
From the foothill streets, the Lower Clamshell route wastes no time gaining elevation, making it a solid choice when you want a workout in under a couple of hours. As you climb, the city drops away and the view opens from Irwindale’s quarries all the way toward downtown Los Angeles on a clear day. Aim for late afternoon for cooler temperatures and a great sunset from the bench before heading back down.
