Best close-to-campus stroll
Campus Point and UCSB Lagoon Loop
On The Ucsb Shoreline • Easy Coastal Bluff And Beach Loop • Perfect First Hike Without A Car
A mellow loop that strings together lagoon paths, bluff-top views, and a sandy stretch of beach just steps from Isla Vista housing.
If you want trail time but only have an hour between commitments, this is the move. Start near Campus Point, walk the lagoon trail, then drop to the beach and climb back up along the bluffs for constant ocean views. Birdlife around the lagoon and surf rolling in below keep it interesting even on your tenth lap.
02
Best sunset bluff walk
Ellwood Mesa and Bluffs
Ellwood Mesa In Goleta • Open-Space Bluff Network Above The Beach • Go-To Golden Hour Escape
A web of soft trails leads across coastal grasslands to dramatic clifftop views and easy access down to a long, wild-feeling beach.
Ellwood is where locals head when they want big skies and sea air without much climbing. You can wander short loops through the mesa or follow the bluffs until the sun drops straight into the Pacific. In winter, detour near the eucalyptus groves to look for monarch butterflies clustered in the trees.
03
Classic Santa Barbara viewpoint
Inspiration Point via Tunnel Trail
Foothills Above Santa Barbara • Steady Canyon Climb To A Panoramic Ridge • Best Intro To Front-Country Hiking
A popular out-and-back that winds up a rocky canyon and finishes on a ridge with sweeping views over Santa Barbara, Goleta, and the Channel Islands.
This is the trail many locals recommend when someone asks for a 'real hike' near town. Expect a firm uphill but nothing technical, with enough rock and switchbacks to feel like an adventure. Start early on warm days, bring plenty of water, and linger at the top to pick out Isla Vista and the UCSB campus below.
04
Shadiest canyon route
Rattlesnake Canyon Trail
Mission Canyon In Santa Barbara • Creekside Singletrack Under Oaks And Sycamores • Best Choice For Warmer Days
A gently climbing trail that follows a seasonal creek through a narrow, wooded canyon, with pockets of boulders and occasional viewpoints.
Despite the name, this is one of the friendlier front-country hikes, thanks to frequent shade and a softer tread underfoot. The trail feels surprisingly tucked away given how close it is to town, with birdsong and the sound of water after rains. Go as far as you like before turning around, or push higher for bigger views of the coastline.
05
Most unique rock formations
Gaviota Wind Caves Trail
Gaviota State Park, West Of Goleta • Coastal Hillside Hike To Sculpted Sandstone Caves • Best Half-Day Adventure From Isla Vista
A short but steady climb up grassy hillsides leads to honeycombed sandstone caves with wide views of the coastline and the Gaviota Pass.
If you are up for a drive up the 101, this trail delivers something different from the usual canyon hike. The route is exposed and can be windy, but the payoff is scrambling around wind-carved caves and looking out over rolling hills to the ocean. Time it for cooler parts of the day and bring a friend for photos and exploration around the rock formations.
