Best easy loop
Lake Tabeaud Loop
North Of Jackson Off Highway 88 • Lakeside Loop Through Oaks And Pines • Best Easy Family Walk
An easy shoreline circuit around a small reservoir with big payoff in scenery and shade.
This loop around Lake Tabeaud stays mostly gentle and close to the water, making it a go-to for casual walkers, kids, and leashed dogs. Expect a mix of dirt path and service road, plenty of birdlife, and scattered picnic spots with views across the water. It can get hot and exposed in midsummer, so spring and fall offer the most comfortable walking and greener hillsides.

Closest viewpoint
Mount Zion State Forest
East Of Jackson Along Highway 88 • Short Summit Hike With Lookout Views • Best Close-To-Town Viewpoint
A short but steady climb leads to a fire lookout with broad views over Jackson, the foothills, and toward the distant Sierra crest.
The Mount Zion trail wastes no time gaining elevation, switchbacking through pines and manzanita to a rocky summit and communication towers. The payoff is a big overlook that lets you trace Highway 49 and the patchwork of ranches and oak woodlands below. It’s a great quick outing at sunset, but the upper stretch is exposed, so carry water and a light if you linger for the colors.

Foothill ramble
Independence Flat Loop
North Of Jackson Near Highway 49 • Open Foothill Loop On Old Ranch Roads • Spring Wildflower Favorite
Wide open foothill paths roll through grasslands and scattered oaks with big-sky views and seasonal wildflowers.
Independence Flat offers a network of old ranch and mining roads that hikers often link into a moderate loop above the Mokelumne River corridor. In late winter and spring, the hills glow green and can be carpeted with poppies and other wildflowers, while summer brings a much drier, hotter feel with little shade. The footing is generally easy, but expect some short, punchy climbs and carry plenty of water if the sun is out.

Riverside classic
Mokelumne River Canyon via Electra Road
Mokelumne River East Of Jackson • Riverside Road And Path Along A Canyon • Best River Stroll And Swim Access
A relaxed riverside walk where you hear rapids the whole way and can slip down to calmer pools on warm days.
From the gate on Electra Road, a mostly paved service road follows the Mokelumne upstream, hugging the canyon wall with constant views and the sound of whitewater. Short side paths drop to small beaches and rock slabs where locals sun, fish, and cool off when flows are safe. Parking is limited and the corridor is popular on hot weekends, so arrive early and keep an eye on river conditions in stormy seasons.

Historic hillside walk
Amador City & Bunker Hill Trails
South Of Jackson In Amador City • Historic Hillside Paths Above A Gold Rush Town • Best History-Meets-Hiking Outing
Short, sometimes steep paths climb from Amador City’s tiny main street into oak hills dotted with old mining sites and viewpoints.
Starting a few blocks from the historic storefronts, these trails stitch together old roads and singletrack above the Bunker Hill Mine area. The route is compact but varied, mixing shaded gullies, open grassy slopes, and glimpses of rusting mining relics with views back over town. It pairs easily with a post-hike drink or bite on Main Street, but the rocky, uneven stretches make sturdy shoes and a bit of care worthwhile.
