01
Best all-around coastal challenge
Jenner Headlands Preserve
Just North Of Jenner Along Highway 1 • Wild Ocean-To-Ridge Preserve • Big-Day Hike With Huge Views
A network of steep trails climbs from sea level to windy ridgetops with wide-open views of the Sonoma Coast.
Start low near Highway 1 and work your way up the Sea to Sky-style routes to get the full sense of how the landscape stacks from ocean to ridgeline. The grades are sustained, but you’re rewarded with broad, quiet views and a sense of real backcountry just minutes from town. Go early on clear days to beat coastal fog and have the high points mostly to yourself.
02
Best classic ocean views
Kortum Trail, Sonoma Coast State Park
Sonoma Coast State Park, South Of Jenner • Blufftop Coastal Trail • Scenic Out-And-Back Favorite
This gently rolling path traces the edge of low bluffs with constant Pacific views and easy access to pocket beaches.
Most hikers link Shell Beach and Blind Beach for a relaxed coastal walk with plenty of spots to stop for photos or tidepooling. The tread is mostly smooth and open, making it a good choice for mixed-ability groups who still want big scenery. On windy days, bring a layer and enjoy watching waves hammer the offshore rock stacks from a comfortable distance.
03
Best moderate loop hike
Red Hill via Pomo Canyon Trail
Pomo Canyon, Inland From Shell Beach • Creekside Canyon And Ridge Loop • Coast-Meets-Inland Sampler
A varied loop that climbs from a wooded creek drainage to an open summit with panoramic views back to the ocean.
You begin under redwoods and bays along Pomo Canyon before switchbacking up slopes that open suddenly onto grassy ridges. From Red Hill, the view takes in the Russian River mouth, rolling coastal hills, and far-off headlands, making the climb feel worthwhile. The route feels more off-the-beaten-path than the bluff trails but is still close enough to pair with a beach stop.
04
Best quick coastal stop
Goat Rock State Beach Trails
Mouth Of The Russian River, Just South Of Town • Short Coastal Ramble With River And Rock Views • Perfect Leg-Stretcher With Drama
Short paths and social trails lead to overlooks of Goat Rock, the river mouth, and broad, wave-pounded beaches.
Instead of just parking and walking the sand, explore the informal paths along the bluffs and out toward Goat Rock for shifting angles on the cliffs and sea stacks. The walking is short but surprisingly dramatic, with crashing surf on one side and the calm sweep of the river estuary on the other. It is an easy add-on before or after a longer hike, especially when you want sunset views without a big effort.
05
Best cool forest escape
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve
Guerneville, Inland Along The Russian River • Shaded Redwood Grove Trail System • Go-To Redwood Stroll Near The Coast
A network of mellow trails winds through towering old-growth redwoods, a welcome contrast to exposed coastal hikes.
When the wind and fog pick up on the headlands, locals often duck inland to Armstrong for reliably calmer, cooler walking among huge trees. The main grove loop is flat and family-friendly, while side trails climb gently into quieter upper forest if you want a bit more exercise. It pairs well with a coastal hike on the same day, giving you both redwood shade and ocean air in one trip.
