Best wide-open escape
Carrizo Plain National Monument
Southwest In The Carrizo Plain • Vast Grassland And Alkali Flat Preserve • Best For Wildflower Season
A huge, quiet basin with gentle trails and boardwalks that feel a world away from the I-5 corridor.
Head southwest from Kettleman City and you’ll hit the Carrizo Plain, where short walks like the Soda Lake Boardwalk and Overlook Hill trail give you big-sky views with very little effort. In good wildflower years, the surrounding hills and valley floor explode with color, making even a casual stroll feel memorable. Services are essentially nonexistent out here, so come with a full tank, plenty of water, and an eye on the weather.
02
Big-view ridge hike
Caliente Ridge Trail (Carrizo Plain)
Carrizo Plain Backcountry • Rugged Ridgetop Route • Best For Strong Hikers
A long, rolling ridge walk tracing the spine of the Carrizo Plain with near-constant views on both sides.
For a more committed outing in the same region, the Caliente Ridge Trail climbs onto a high spine above the plain and follows it for miles. You can turn around whenever you like, but even a shorter out-and-back delivers huge horizons, solitude, and a good workout. The route is exposed and remote, so pick a cool-season day, bring more water than you think you need, and be ready for wind on the crest.
03
Most flexible day trip
Millerton Lake State Recreation Area
Northeast Toward Millerton Lake • Lakeside Foothill Park • Best For Varied Distances
Rolling trails above a long reservoir, with routes that range from easy shoreline strolls to steeper climbs for views.
North of Fresno, Millerton Lake offers a very different feel from the valley floor around Kettleman City, with golden foothills, blue water, and a web of trails. You can keep it mellow with short paths along the shoreline or tackle longer loops that climb to overlooks and ridge points. Shade is limited, so this spot shines in cooler months or for early-morning and winter weekend hikes when the air is crisp and the light is soft over the lake.
04
Best low-key nature walk
Kaweah Oaks Preserve
East Toward Visalia • Valley Oak Nature Preserve • Best For Families And Beginners
Flat, meandering paths through old valley oak woodland and seasonal streams just outside the citrus belt.
If you want something gentler than a ridge climb, Kaweah Oaks Preserve delivers an easy, close-to-flat network of trails that still feels wild. Short loops wind through ancient valley oaks, dense understory, and occasionally damp creekbeds, with good birdlife and a sense of how the Central Valley once looked. It’s an ideal stretch-your-legs stop on a driving day or a relaxed outing for kids, with enough shade to make it pleasant outside of the hottest hours.
05
Classic summit outing
Cerro Alto Trail, Los Padres National Forest
West Toward The Coast Range • Steep Summit Trail • Best Half-Day Challenge
A sustained climb to a prominent peak with sweeping views toward Morro Bay and the Central Coast on clear days.
West of Kettleman City, near the highway link to the coast, the Cerro Alto Trail wastes no time gaining elevation through chaparral and oak. The grade is steady and sometimes steep, but the payoff from the top—rolling Coast Range ridges and, on clear days, a glimpse of the Pacific—feels far removed from the flat valley drive. Start early to beat heat and crowds, and be ready for a straightforward but rewarding up-and-down that fits neatly into a half day.
