Tahoe Rim Trail to Picnic Rock Viewpoint
Brockway Summit Above Kings Beach • Forest Singletrack To Sweeping Lake Overlook • Best Overall North Shore Hike
A moderate climb from Brockway Summit delivers a rocky perch with a postcard-wide view of Lake Tahoe.
Starting just a few minutes up Highway 267 from Kings Beach, this segment of the Tahoe Rim Trail feels wild without being remote. The path winds through shady pines before breaking out onto Picnic Rock, where you can see deep into both the North and East shores. Go early or near sunset for cooler temps and fewer people.

Easiest lake view
Stateline Fire Lookout
North Lake Tahoe State Line Above Crystal Bay • Paved Lookout Walk Through Old-Growth Pines • Best Easy Family Walk
A short, mostly paved ascent leads to historic lookout ruins with huge views over Kings Beach and the North Shore.
The Stateline Fire Lookout is ideal when you want big scenery without a big effort. From the gated road above Crystal Bay, you follow a gentle climb past interpretive signs to a bluff dotted with old foundations and viewing platforms. Kids, visitors adjusting to the altitude, and sunset photographers all love this one.

Most iconic photo spot
Monkey Rock via Tunnel Creek Trail
Incline Village East Shore • Sandy Service Road With Dramatic Lake Vistas • Best For First-Time Visitors
A short, steady climb to a monkey-shaped boulder overlooking the deep blue of Lake Tahoe’s east shore.
From the Tunnel Creek trailhead in Incline Village, the route climbs a wide, sometimes sandy path with frequent breaks to catch your breath and enjoy the view. At the top, the carved granite ‘monkey’ and sweeping shoreline backdrop practically demand a photo stop. It can be hot and exposed, so go early in the day and bring plenty of water.
04
Best mellow meadow walk
Martis Creek Trail
Martis Valley Between Kings Beach And Truckee • Open Meadow And Creekside Nature Path • Best For Relaxed Half-Day Exploring
A mostly flat loop through fields, sage, and willows with mountain views and good chances to spot birds and wildlife.
Just over the hill from Kings Beach, Martis Creek offers a quieter, more open landscape than the lakeshore forests. The trail system here meanders along the creek and through broad meadows, making it a great choice for casual walkers, families, and anyone acclimating to the altitude. Visit in early summer for wildflowers or toward evening when the light and birdlife are at their best.
05
Best high-country escape
Tahoe Meadows to Chickadee Ridge
Tahoe Meadows On Mount Rose Highway • High-Alpine Meadow And Ridge Wander • Best For Big Sierra Feel Close To Town
A flexible, mostly gentle route across open meadows to a low ridge with expansive views over Lake Tahoe and the surrounding peaks.
A short drive up the Mount Rose Highway transports you from lakeside pines to bright, high-country meadows. From the Tahoe Meadows trailhead, you can make a simple out-and-back toward Chickadee Ridge, tailoring the distance to your group. In summer the wildflowers and cool breezes are the draw; in shoulder seasons, it’s a quick way to feel like you’ve escaped deep into the mountains.
