Starting from a rough forest road near the Kingvale exit, this trail rolls through lodgepole pine and open granite slabs before easing into the Lower Lola Montez basin. Expect a mix of old road and singletrack with a few short, punchy climbs that feel easier on the way out than on the way back. Early summer brings wildflowers and lingering snow patches; by late season the lake is a mellow spot for a quick dip and a picnic away from the freeway noise.

A stout but rewarding ascent that links three granite-rimmed lakes, each a little quieter than the last.
The Loch Leven Lakes trail wastes no time gaining elevation, switchbacking up rocky slopes and old railroad grade above the South Yuba River before breaking out into open granite. Many hikers turn around at the first lake, but continuing to Middle and High Loch Leven buys you more solitude, better campsites, and broad Sierra views. The descent can be tough on tired knees and is exposed in spots, so most locals start early and bring trekking poles if they have them.

From the Castle Peak trailhead near Boreal, an easy forest road leads to open meadows before a steeper singletrack climbs the final ridge. The last bit to the summit is rocky and a little loose, but the 360-degree views from the top make every step worth it. On clear days you can trace the I-80 corridor back toward Kingvale and watch afternoon light sweep across Donner Pass and the surrounding peaks.

This segment of the Donner Lake Rim Trail is a locals' go-to for after-work hikes and casual weekend rambles because you can simply turn around when you've had your fill of views. Starting from trailheads above the north shore, the route undulates along the hillside, dipping in and out of forest and breaking out onto slabs that overlook the lake far below. The moderate grade and good tread make it friendly for mixed-ability groups, dogs, and hikers still acclimating to the elevation.

From the old highway at Donner Summit, you can hop on the Pacific Crest Trail and follow it along the crest toward Roller Pass or Anderson Peak, choosing your own turnaround point. The path winds past old stone snowsheds and ski-area boundaries, with constant glimpses back toward Donner Lake and the forested slopes above Kingvale. In midsummer you'll often share the tread with northbound and southbound thru-hikers, adding a fun trail-community feel to a straightforward day hike.
