Best redwood canyon hike
Maple Falls via Bridge Creek Trail
Aptos — The Forest Of Nisene Marks • Waterfall And Redwood Creek Trail • Local Favorite For Longer Outings
A winding trek up a shaded redwood canyon to a tucked-away waterfall, perfect when you want to feel deep in the forest without driving far.
Starting from the lower Nisene Marks parking areas, the trail follows old roads and then a narrower singletrack along Bridge Creek, with several easy creek crossings as you approach the falls. The grade is moderate but steady, so plan on a few hours round-trip and bring shoes that can handle a bit of mud and wet rock. It’s a great choice on warm days when the canyon stays cool and quiet.

Most peaceful forest loop
Land of Medicine Buddha Loop
Soquel Foothills • Quiet Forest Loop With Spiritual Touches • Best For Reflective Walkers
A hushed loop through second-growth redwoods and chaparral, dotted with prayer flags and small shrines that give the hike a contemplative feel.
This loop threads through the hills above Soquel, mixing gentle grades with a few short climbs that get your heart going without feeling punishing. Between the bells, flags, and tucked-away benches, there are plenty of spots to pause and take in the forest. Go early or on weekdays if you prefer a slower, more meditative pace with fewer people on the trail.

Best half-day workout
Sand Point Overlook via Aptos Creek Fire Road
Upper Aptos Redwoods • Gradual Fire-Road Climb To Sweeping Overlook • Best For Steady Climbers
A broad, steady fire road that climbs from the lower redwoods to a high ridge with big views over the Nisene Marks canopy and out toward the bay.
From the Nisene Marks entrance, you follow the main fire road as it gently but relentlessly gains elevation, making it ideal for hikers who like a continuous uphill grind. The wide track lets you hike side by side and makes footing easy, even when you’re tired. At the top, Sand Point’s benches and views give you a satisfying payoff before the fun, mostly downhill return.

Easiest coastal stroll
Seacliff State Beach to New Brighton Bluff Trail
Cliffs North Of La Selva Beach • Easy Seaside Path And Beach Stroll • Best Relaxed Coastal Walk
A gentle out-and-back along the bluffs and beach, with changing angles on the pier, the cement ship, and the shoreline cliffs.
Start at Seacliff and wander north along the promenade and beach, then climb to the bluffs toward New Brighton for a bit more exercise and better viewpoints. It’s mostly flat, with plenty of benches and railings, making it friendly for casual walkers, visiting family, and anyone easing into local hiking. Time it for low tide if you want more room to roam on the sand below the cliffs.
05
Best dramatic ocean views
Wilder Ranch Coastal Bluffs Trail
North Of Santa Cruz • Open Coastal Bluffs And Historic Farm Landscape • Best For Big-Sky Scenery
A mostly level path along rugged cliffs and pocket coves, where crashing surf and seabirds steal the show from start to finish.
Just a short drive up the coast from La Selva, Wilder Ranch’s coastal trail lets you leave the forest behind for wide horizons, wind-swept fields, and constant ocean noise. The route is easy to tailor to your energy, with multiple turn-around points and side paths to viewpoints. Expect more wind and sun here than in the redwoods, so pack layers and a hat if you plan to linger at the overlooks.
