Best overall pick
Lake Almanor Recreation Trail
West Shore Of Lake Almanor • Scenic Lakefront Path • Local Favorite
A gently rolling shoreline trail with constant lake views and easy access from multiple points around the west shore.
If you only have time for one hike near Lake Almanor Country Club, make it this one. The wide, mostly level path winds through pine forest and along the water, with peek-a-boo views of the mountains and frequent spots to duck down to the shoreline. It’s ideal for casual walkers, families, and anyone looking for a classic Lake Almanor sunset or sunrise stroll.
02
Easiest family stroll
Collins Pine Nature Trail
Chester • Shaded Interpretive Forest Loop • Best For Families
A short, well-marked loop through working forest lands that trades big views for quiet woods and kid-friendly terrain.
Tucked just off the main drag in Chester, this mellow loop is a great leg-stretcher on your way to or from the Country Club. Signs along the trail explain local forestry and tree species, giving you a sense of the landscape beyond the lake. The even footing and modest distance make it a reliable choice for younger kids or multigenerational groups.
03
Most unique landscape
Bumpass Hell Trail
Lassen Volcanic National Park • Geothermal Boardwalk Hike • Best For First-Time Visitors To Lassen
A medium-effort alpine hike to steaming vents, boiling pools, and boardwalks that showcase the volcanic heart of the region.
Within an easy drive from Lake Almanor, Bumpass Hell delivers a completely different side of Northern California. The trail starts high, with sweeping views of surrounding peaks, before dropping into a basin of mud pots and fumaroles reached by sturdy boardwalks. Go early or on a shoulder-season weekday for cooler temps and fewer crowds on the narrow stretches of trail.
04
Best summit challenge
Brokeoff Mountain Trail
Southwest Of Lassen Peak • Steady Forest-To-Summit Climb • Best For Experienced Hikers
A demanding but rewarding climb to one of the finest viewpoints in the Lassen area, with constant variety along the way.
This full-half-day outing is the go-to “big hike” for many Lake Almanor regulars willing to drive into Lassen for serious elevation gain. The trail transitions from cool forest to open slopes and rocky switchbacks, finishing on a narrow summit ridge with far-reaching views over the park and back toward the Lake Almanor Basin. Pack plenty of water, start early, and be ready for changing weather, especially outside midsummer.
05
Best off-the-radar meadow walk
Humbug Valley & Yellow Creek
South Of Lake Almanor • Wide Meadow And Creekside Ramble • Quiet Escape
A low-key wander through a broad meadow basin where Yellow Creek twists past pines, wildflowers, and pockets of shaded fishing spots.
For a more secluded feel than the lakeshore, locals head into Humbug Valley on good dirt roads when conditions allow. The hiking here is less about a set trail and more about exploring old tracks and creekside paths, so it rewards those who like to meander and stop often. It’s a lovely place to bring a picnic, listen to the water, and enjoy a slower pace away from boat noise and highway traffic.
