Best lakeside path
Lake Almanor Recreation Trail
West Shore Of Lake Almanor • Lakeside Paved Multi-Use Trail • Best Overall Pick
A gently rolling paved path that traces the west shore of Lake Almanor with frequent peeks at the water and Mount Lassen on the horizon.
If you only have time for one hike near the peninsula, make it this one. Multiple trailheads let you choose anything from a short leg-stretcher to a longer out-and-back along the shore. The grade is mellow, the shade is reliable, and the combo of lake views and tall pines makes it as good for a morning run as a family stroll.
02
Coziest forest walk
Domingo Springs Trail
South Of Chester • Shaded Creekside Forest Trail • Best For A Relaxed Outing
A short, quiet walk through cool timber to clear spring water and a burbling creek, ideal when you want something low-key but scenic.
Domingo Springs feels tucked away yet is only a short drive from the Lake Almanor Peninsula. The trail meanders through dense forest to a cluster of clear springs and a chilly creek, with picnic-friendly spots along the way. It’s a good choice for hot summer afternoons, younger kids, or a leg-stretch before heading deeper into Lassen.
03
Big-view ridge hike
Humbug Summit to Humboldt Peak
High Ridge East Of Lake Almanor Basin • High-Country Summit And Ridge Route • Challenging Scenic Outing
A more strenuous ridge hike that rewards the effort with sweeping views over Lake Almanor, distant peaks, and wild backcountry forest.
Starting from Humbug Summit, this route climbs along an open ridge toward Humboldt Peak, with expanding views almost the entire way. The trail feels more remote than its distance from Chester suggests, and snow can linger early in the season. Confident hikers who want a bigger workout and wide-open vistas will find this a standout day trip from the peninsula.
04
Classic lake-and-lookout hike
Juniper Lake / Mount Harkness Trail
Juniper Lake Area, Lassen Volcanic National Park • Alpine Lake And Fire Lookout Climb • National Park Showpiece
A memorable climb from the shore of Juniper Lake up to the Mount Harkness fire lookout, with big panoramas over Lassen’s volcanic landscape.
Reaching Juniper Lake requires a rougher road, but the reward is a quieter corner of Lassen that still feels close to Lake Almanor. From the lakeshore, the Mount Harkness trail heads steadily uphill through forest to open slopes and a historic lookout perched on the summit. On clear days you can spot Lake Almanor, the park’s major peaks, and an impressive sweep of northern Sierra and Cascades country.

Most unique terrain
Devil's Kitchen Trail
Warner Valley, Lassen Volcanic National Park • Geothermal Valley Hike • Best For A Geothermal Side Trip
A moderate hike through meadows and forest to a pocket of bubbling mudpots, steaming vents, and colorful mineral deposits.
From the Warner Valley area, the trail to Devil’s Kitchen feels worlds away from the calm waters of Lake Almanor but still makes an easy day trip. The path is relatively gentle as it winds past creeks and meadows before arriving at steaming vents and gurgling hydrothermal pools. It’s a great way to add some classic Lassen geology to a Lake Almanor hiking weekend without tackling a huge climb.
