Caswell’s network of easy trails makes it feel far from the freeways, even though it is a short drive from Lathrop. In summer, the heavy shade and river access are a welcome break from the heat, while spring and fall bring good birdwatching and wildflowers.

Although it requires a longer drive from Lathrop, Mission Peak is the go-to challenge hike for many Central Valley and Bay Area residents. The route is steep and largely exposed, so expect a serious workout and start early on warm days, bringing plenty of water. On clear afternoons you can look back across the Diablo Range toward the Central Valley and trace the rivers that run past Lathrop.
