Waterfall and foliage gem
Lundy Canyon Trail
Lundy Canyon North Of Town • Waterfall-Filled Glacial Canyon Hike • Best Fall Color Hike
A moderate trail that dives into a narrow canyon lined with aspen, beaver ponds, and a string of impressive waterfalls.
From the end of the paved road up Lundy Canyon, the trail follows an old road before narrowing into a classic U-shaped glacial valley. In spring and early summer, cascades roar down the cliffs; in autumn, the aspen groves turn the canyon walls gold. It’s close enough for a quick outing from Lee Vining but scenic enough to feel like a destination on its own.

Quiet lakeside escape
Parker Lake Trail
June Lake Loop West Of Lee Vining • Forest And Lakeshore Out-And-Back • Best Half-Day Outing
A steady but manageable climb to a peaceful alpine lake backed by steep ridges and often calm, reflective water.
Reached via a short drive down the north end of the June Lake Loop, the Parker Lake Trail starts dry and open before slipping into shaded forest. The grade is moderate enough for most hikers but still feels like a proper walk into the mountains. At the lake, a rough use path along the shore reveals quiet coves and big views up the basin, perfect for a long break or picnic.

This is the go-to option when you want fresh air without a long drive or a big elevation gain. The path traces the creek through willows and sagebrush, with occasional openings that frame Mono Lake and the volcanic hills beyond. It’s ideal for stretching your legs after arriving in town, walking with kids, or catching late-afternoon light without committing to a longer hike.

Signature Mono Lake walk
Mono Lake South Tufa Area Trail
Mono Lake South Shore • Otherworldly Lakeshore Ramble • Iconic Mono Lake Experience
A mellow loop through clusters of tufa towers and along the shore of Mono Lake, with big-sky views and abundant birdlife.
Though more of a nature walk than a mountain hike, this trail is essential for understanding the landscape that defines Lee Vining. A well-marked path winds between calcium-carbonate tufa spires and down to the water’s edge, where you can watch gulls, phalaropes, and other migratory birds. Go near sunrise or sunset for softer light, cooler temperatures, and an even more surreal feel to the lake and its strange formations.
