Best adventurous side trip
Cleo's Bath
Back Side Of Pinecrest Lake • Granite Scramble To Pools • Short But Rugged Adventure
A steeper, rockier extension from Pinecrest that climbs to polished granite pools and a chilly mountain plunge.
Starting from the Pinecrest Lake Loop, an unassuming junction leads you uphill toward the cascades and natural basins known as Cleo’s Bath. The route is rougher and less clearly marked than the main loop, with boulder hopping, narrow dirt tread, and some light scrambling near the top. It’s a favorite for strong hikers who don’t mind route-finding and want a dramatic viewpoint and swimming hole without committing to a full-day trek.

Best riverside wander
Lyons Lake to Fraser Flat Trail
Stanislaus River Canyon East Of Long Barn • Forest And River Corridor Trail • Relaxed Half-Day Outing
A gentle, woodsy trail that traces the South Fork Stanislaus River between Lyons Reservoir and Fraser Flat.
This trail offers a quieter alternative to the busier lake loops, with long stretches of soft forest tread and steady river sounds. Expect a mix of shaded sections under tall conifers, open patches with wildflowers in season, and occasional access points where you can drop down closer to the water. It’s a solid choice for anglers, casual hikers, and anyone looking for a mellow hike not far from Long Barn.

Best high-country escape
Bell Meadow Trail to Big Lake
High Country Off Highway 108 • Meadow And Alpine Lake Hike • All-Day Mountain Outing
A longer backcountry-style hike that links airy meadows, forested stretches, and a quiet alpine lake outlook.
Once the snow melts, the Bell Meadow Trail is a standout for hikers who want to feel like they’ve truly left the highway behind. The route climbs gently through mixed forest before opening into broad meadows, which can be lush with wildflowers early in the season, then continues toward the Big Lake area with wide Sierra views. It’s less trafficked than Pinecrest, so be prepared with maps, layers, and enough time to linger in the open country before heading back down.

Worth-the-drive classic
South Grove Trail, Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Highway 4 Corridor West Of Long Barn • Sequoia Grove Day Hike • Iconic Big-Tree Walk
A moderate forest loop through one of the Sierra’s finest stands of giant sequoias, with a more secluded feel than the park’s main grove.
You’ll have to drive over to Highway 4, but the South Grove Trail is a logical full-day outing from Long Barn if you want to trade granite slabs for towering sequoias. The path rolls gently along a creek and through mixed conifer forest before entering the heart of the grove, where massive trunks and filtered light create a hushed, almost cathedral-like atmosphere. It’s a rewarding hike for visitors who don’t mind a bit of windshield time in exchange for classic Sierra scenery.
