Best for unhurried beach walking
Manchester State Beach
Just North Of Manchester • Wide, Windswept Beach And Dunes Walk • Best For Unhurried Coastal Wandering
Miles of open sand, low dunes, and a big sky feel make Manchester State Beach the local choice for long, meditative walks.
From the Kinney Road or Alder Creek access points, you can drop onto the sand and walk for as far as the tide and your legs allow. Expect sea birds, driftwood piles, and a steady ocean wind rather than crowds or amenities. It is an easy, mostly flat outing, but check tides and bring a windbreaker if the northwest breeze is up.
02
Most dramatic ocean views
Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands
Point Arena Coast • Rugged Bluff-Top Coastal Trail • Most Dramatic Ocean Views
This BLM coastline strings together sea cliffs, arches, sinkholes, and pounding surf just a short drive south of Manchester.
The main route follows grassy headlands above the Pacific, with informal side paths leading to jaw-dropping viewpoints over sculpted rock and sea stacks. It is mostly level but fully exposed, so wind and fog are part of the experience and kids need to be kept well back from the cliff edges. Go on a clear afternoon for huge horizons and some of the best coastal scenery on this stretch of Highway 1.
03
Best short historic walk
Point Arena Lighthouse and Trail
Point Arena Light Station • Short Historic Lighthouse Walk Along The Cliffs • Easy Coastal Sampler
A compact loop around the Point Arena Light Station pairs history with sweeping bluff-top views in an easy, family-friendly package.
You can tour the lighthouse itself, then wander the signed paths that trace the fenced cliff edge above a churning, rocky shoreline. It is an ideal choice if you want big views without committing to a long hike, or if your group mixes serious walkers with folks who prefer to linger near the parking area. On clear days, the combination of bright white lighthouse, turquoise water, and distant headlands is hard to beat for photos.
04
Best low-key sunset stroll
Navarro Beach
Navarro River Mouth • Driftwood-Strewn Beach And River Walk • Best Low-Key Sunset Stroll
Where the Navarro River meets the sea, a short walk delivers a wide cobble-and-sand beach backed by massive driftwood piles and distant headlands.
From the parking area just off Highway 1, a brief path takes you down to the beach, where you can meander along the river, poke around the driftwood sculptures, or wander toward the ocean. It is more of an exploratory ramble than a set trail, which suits sunset picnics and leg-stretches on a driving day. Watch for changing river channels and strong surf if you edge near the waterline.
05
Best forest escape
Fern Canyon Scenic Trail
Van Damme State Park, North Of Mendocino • Shaded Redwood Canyon Trail • Best Forest Escape On Foggy Days
A gently graded path follows a clear creek into a narrow canyon lined with redwoods and lush ferns, far from the coastal wind.
Starting from inland Van Damme State Park, the trail climbs so gradually that most walkers barely notice, crossing wooden bridges and passing quiet groves of second-growth redwood. It is a good choice when the coast is socked in or blustery, offering cool shade and birdsong instead of breaking waves. Expect damp ground and occasional mud, especially in winter and spring, and plan extra time if you like to stop for photos along the creek.
