Closest wild-feeling escape
Caswell Memorial State Park
South Of Manteca Along The Stanislaus River • Shaded Riverside State Park • Best For Nature-Focused Day Hikes
A rare remnant of Central Valley riparian forest with short, shady trails right on the Stanislaus River.
Just a short drive south of Manteca, Caswell feels far wilder than its mileage suggests, with sandy paths winding through dense oak, willow, and cottonwood. The trails are mostly flat and crisscross between river overlooks and quiet side channels, making it easy to tailor a loop to your energy level. Go early in summer for cooler temperatures and a better chance of spotting deer, great blue herons, and other river wildlife.

River Islands San Joaquin River Trail
River Islands / Lathrop, West Of Manteca • Levee-Top Multiuse River Path • Best For Relaxed Strolls And Sunset Walks
A mellow levee trail tracing the San Joaquin River with wide views, breezes, and plenty of sky.
This path runs along the levees at River Islands, giving you long open views of the San Joaquin and surrounding farmland while staying close to town. The crushed-gravel and paved sections are mostly flat, so it works just as well for a brisk training walk as for a slow meander to watch the light change in the evening. Expect more people near the neighborhoods and quieter stretches as you head farther along the river.

Best day trip hike
Knights Ferry & Stanislaus River Trails
Foothills East Of Manteca Near Oakdale • Historic River Canyon Trail Network • Best For Longer Scenic Outings
Rolling riverside trails, volcanic rock formations, and a historic covered bridge make this a classic foothill hike within an easy drive.
Knights Ferry sits where the Stanislaus River cuts through low foothills, creating a string of trails that feel very different from the flat valley around Manteca. You can combine riverside paths with short climbs to overlooks, watching rafters below and hawks riding the thermals above. In spring the hillsides pop with wildflowers, while fall brings softer light and lower crowds, making it a rewarding full- or half-day escape.
