01
Best overall pick
Tennessee Valley Trail
Tennessee Valley, Just Southwest Of Marin City • Gentle Coastal Valley Walk • Best Easy Hike With A Big Payoff
A mostly flat walk through a quiet coastal valley that ends at a wild pocket beach framed by cliffs.
From the Tennessee Valley trailhead, a wide path winds past grasslands and low hills toward a dramatic cove, making this one of the easiest and most rewarding hikes near Marin City. It’s a favorite for families, casual walkers, and anyone who wants ocean scenery without a big climb. On foggy days it feels secluded and moody; on clear days you get long views up and down the coast.
02
Iconic headlands views
Rodeo Beach & Coastal Trail Loop
Marin Headlands, South Of Marin City • Rugged Coastal Headlands Loop • Classic Golden Gate Viewpoint Hike
A bluff-top circuit above Rodeo Beach with constant ocean, headlands, and bridge views when the fog lifts.
Starting from Rodeo Beach, short but steep climbs take you quickly onto the Coastal Trail, where waves crash far below and the Point Bonita lighthouse and bridge often steal the show. The loop can be tailored shorter or longer using connecting trails, so it works for both ambitious hikers and visitors with just a couple of hours. Expect wind, changing weather, and some of the most photogenic scenery anywhere near Marin City.
03
Big training loop
Marincello–Miwok–Old Springs Loop
Hills Above Marin City • Wide Fire Road And Singletrack Circuit • Best For Strong Hikers And Trail Runners
A stout climb on old ranch roads leading to rolling ridges with long views over the bay, the bridge, and Mount Tam.
This loop links the broad Marincello fire road with stretches of the Miwok and Old Springs trails, delivering a steady workout and a shifting mix of vistas. It’s popular with local runners and hikers who want something longer and less crowded than the beach-focused routes. The open hillsides offer sweeping views but little shade, so it’s best tackled in cooler parts of the day.
04
Best ridge ramble
Dias Ridge Trail
Ridge Between Mill Valley And Muir Beach • Rolling Ridge Hike With Ocean Vistas • Scenic Out-And-Back For Sunset
A switchbacking trail that climbs to a grassy ridgeline and follows it toward the ocean with views in nearly every direction.
Dias Ridge starts high above Highway 1 and quickly rises to open slopes where you can look back toward Mount Tam and out to the Pacific. Many hikers simply follow the ridge until the views crest, then turn around for an easy-to-follow out-and-back. It’s a graceful, well-built trail that feels surprisingly remote given how close it is to Marin City and Mill Valley.
05
Summit experience
Mount Tamalpais East Peak – Verna Dunshee Trail
Mount Tamalpais State Park • Summit Loop With Sweeping Panoramas • Best Short Summit Walk
A short, mostly level loop circling Mount Tam’s East Peak with huge views over the Bay, the Headlands, and out to the Farallones on clear days.
From the East Peak parking area, the Verna Dunshee Trail makes a gentle circuit around the summit, with side steps leading to the fire lookout for a true top-of-the-world feel. It’s an easy, view-packed walk that works well for mixed-ability groups or as a capstone after a longer hike nearby. On weekends and clear evenings it can be busy, but the scenery more than justifies the trip up from Marin City.
