Essential Ojai climb
Pratt Trail to Magic Mountain
Foothills Above Meiners Oaks • Classic Chaparral Ridge Climb • Best Overall Ridge Views
A steady climb from oak canyon to a high ridge with big panoramas over the Ojai Valley.
Starting from the end of Signal Street, Pratt Trail wastes little time before tilting uphill through oaks and into open, sun‑exposed chaparral. You can turn around at the first viewpoints for a shorter outing or push on toward Magic Mountain for a more committed half‑day. Bring plenty of water and start early on warm days—the exposure and elevation gain add up quickly.

Laid-back local loop
Wills–Rice Canyon Loop
Northwest Meiners Oaks Canyon • Shaded Creek-And-Canyon Loop • Best Moderate Loop From Town
A rolling loop through riparian canyon, ranch land, and open hillsides that feels surprisingly wild so close to town.
Accessed from the Oso trailhead off Meyer Road, this loop strings together old ranch roads and singletrack into a satisfying circuit. Expect shaded stretches along the creek, mellow climbs, and wide‑open views across orchards as the canyon opens up. It’s a favorite for locals who want variety and a sense of distance without driving far into the backcountry.

Climbing a short hill above North Signal Street, Shelf Road quickly pops you onto a wide track cut into the hillside. The grade stays mellow, making it popular with walkers, runners, and dog owners looking for an after‑work outing. Go near sunset for long views across the valley as the cliffs over Ojai light up in pink and orange.

Big-day adventure
Gridley Trail to Gridley Springs
Upper Ojai Front Country • Big-View Backcountry Approach • Training Pick For Strong Hikers
A longer, steeper climb that rewards the effort with sweeping vistas and a classic Ojai backcountry feel.
Beginning at Gridley Road’s north end, this trail climbs steadily through citrus and avocado groves before entering wilder terrain. Switchbacks deliver you to higher viewpoints where you can look back over the whole valley and toward the Topatopa range. Many hikers use the springs as a natural turnaround point, but the trail continues if you want to link into longer backcountry routes.
