Best in-town coastal walk
Mendocino Headlands State Park
Around Mendocino Village • Wind-Swept Cliff And Cove Trail • Iconic Oceanside Stroll
A dramatic cliff-top loop encircling the village with constant ocean views and easy come-and-go access.
If you only have time for one Mendocino hike, make it the Headlands. Short paths trace the edge of the bluffs, dipping toward pocket coves, sea caves, and wildflower patches with countless viewpoints to stop and watch for whales. The terrain is mostly flat, and you can start from several pullouts or side streets in town, making it ideal for a spontaneous sunrise or sunset walk.

Best waterfall adventure
Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail
North Of Mendocino On Highway 1 • Lush Canyon And Waterfall Loop • Waterfall Day Hike
A classic Mendocino canyon hike winding through redwoods and ferns to a photogenic 36-foot waterfall.
From the park's inland trailhead, the path follows Russian Gulch Creek upstream under a cool canopy of redwoods and mossy maples. The hike is moderate rather than strenuous, with some roots and mud but nothing technical for most walkers used to a few hours on their feet. Plan extra time to linger at the falls and, if you have energy left, detour to the coastal side of the park to see the famous bridge-framed cove.
03
Best fern canyon escape
Van Damme State Park Fern Canyon Trail
South Of Mendocino Near Little River • Redwood And Fern-Lined Creek Trail • Shaded Summer Retreat
A gently climbing trail that follows a burbling creek through a narrow canyon packed with ferns and redwoods.
Starting near the campground, the Fern Canyon Trail gradually leaves the highway behind and sinks into a quiet, green corridor. The path parallels the creek, crossing it in places, with thick walls of ferns and tall second-growth redwoods offering deep shade even on hot days. It is a great pick for families or anyone who wants a peaceful, immersive forest walk without committing to a long or steep route.
04
Most unique geology
Jug Handle State Natural Reserve Ecological Staircase
Between Mendocino And Fort Bragg • Bluff-Top And Pygmy Forest Route • Educational Nature Walk
A one-of-a-kind trail that climbs ancient marine terraces from ocean bluff to a quirky pygmy forest.
This hike is less about distance and more about discovery, with interpretive signs explaining how each terrace formed over hundreds of thousands of years. You start at coastal bluffs above a sheltered beach, then gradually work inland through changing plant communities until the soil is so old and nutrient-poor that only stunted, bonsai-like trees remain. It is a fascinating choice for hikers who like a side of natural history with their views.
05
Best flat mileage
Big River Haul Road Trail
Mendocino River Estuary • Wide Riverside Path In Second-Growth Redwoods • Easy All-Ages Outing
A broad, mostly level former haul road following Big River deep into a quiet, wooded valley.
Accessed from Big River Beach just east of the village, this trail feels immediately removed from town once you round the first bend in the river. Walk, run, or bike as far as you like along the packed-dirt road, with frequent glimpses of sandbars, herons, and paddlers on the water. Because it is wide and gently graded, it is one of the best options for groups, casual walkers, or anyone easing into longer distances.
