01
Best overall pick
Black Hill Trail
Morro Bay State Park (Upper Park) • Short Coastal Summit Hike • Best Bay Overlook
A quick climb through Monterey pines to one of the finest panoramic views of Morro Bay and the rock.
Starting from the upper State Park Road, Black Hill feels surprisingly wild for how close it is to town. The trail climbs steadily but briefly to a rocky summit with sweeping views of the estuary, sandspit, and coastal hills, making it a perfect first stop for orienting yourself. Aim for a clear morning or late‑day light when the bay and back dunes really glow.
02
Easiest scenic stroll
Marina Peninsula Trail
Morro Bay State Park Marina • Bayfront Boardwalk And Dirt Path • Best For Families And Bird‑Watching
A flat out‑and‑back along the edge of the estuary with easy walking and constant bird activity.
Leaving from the State Park marina area, this mellow path and boardwalk traces the shoreline with close‑up views of eelgrass beds, mudflats, and the back side of Morro Rock. It is ideal for kids, strollers, or an evening leg‑stretch when you do not want a full workout. Bring binoculars—herons, egrets, and shorebirds are almost guaranteed, especially around high tide.
03
Short but steep climb
Cerro Cabrillo Trail
Morro Bay State Park (Quarry Trailhead) • Rocky Inland Peak Hike • Best Quick Workout
A rugged, steeper trail to a rocky summit with inland and bay views that feel surprisingly remote.
Accessed from the Quarry Trail area off South Bay Boulevard, Cerro Cabrillo wastes no time gaining elevation. The upper stretch is rocky and a bit rough underfoot, but the payoff is a 360‑degree vista over the estuary, Los Osos, and the chain of volcanic peaks inland. It is a great choice if you want something more demanding than Black Hill without committing to a long day hike.
04
Best coastal challenge
Valencia Peak Trail
Montaña De Oro State Park • Wild Coastal Mountain Trail • Best Full Half‑Day Hike
A longer, steady climb to a high coastal summit with big‑sky views down the Montaña de Oro shoreline.
About a 15‑minute drive south of Morro Bay, Valencia Peak feels dramatically more rugged than the in‑town hills. The trail climbs through coastal scrub and wildflowers in season, with the ocean dropping away behind you as you gain the ridge. On top, you get far‑reaching views of Morro Rock to the north and the cliffs and coves of Montaña de Oro stretching south—bring water, sun protection, and time to linger.
05
Iconic nearby summit
Bishop Peak Trail
San Luis Obispo • Granite Outcrop Mountain Hike • Best Inland Adventure Close To Town
A popular climb up one of the “Nine Sisters,” offering a different inland perspective on Morro Bay’s backyard range.
Roughly a 20‑minute drive from Morro Bay, Bishop Peak is the go‑to after‑work hike for many San Luis Obispo locals. The well‑used trail winds through oak woodland before tackling a steeper, rocky section near the top, where huge granite boulders frame views toward the ocean and across the city. Go early or near sunset for cooler temperatures and easier parking at this classic Central Coast summit.
