Essential redwood intro
Founders Grove Nature Trail
Humboldt Redwoods State Park – Founders Grove • Short, Iconic Old-Growth Redwood Loop • Best For First-Time Visitors
A flat, family-friendly loop that packs many of the park’s most famous redwoods into an easy stroll.
This is the classic “you are here” hike for Humboldt Redwoods, with towering trunks, mossy logs, and soft needles underfoot. The loop is short enough for almost anyone but still feels immersive, especially around the Dyerville Giant and other enormous downed trees. Go early or late in the day if you prefer quieter trails and softer light filtering through the canopy.

Bull Creek Flats Trail
Humboldt Redwoods State Park – Bull Creek Watershed • Long Riverfront Hike Beneath Massive Redwoods • Best For All-Day Hikers
A longer, rolling trail that follows Bull Creek through some of the park’s deepest and most impressive redwood forest.
If you want to spend real time under the canopy, this is the route locals point to. The trail traces Bull Creek past endless columns of redwoods, with frequent glimpses of water and occasional gravel bars for snack breaks. Plan for a solid half-day or more, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for muddy patches in wetter months.

Quiet grove classic
Rockefeller Loop Trail
Humboldt Redwoods State Park – Rockefeller Forest • Gentle Loop In A Cathedral-Like Redwood Grove • Best For Unhurried Wandering
A short, serene loop through the heart of Rockefeller Forest that often feels calmer than the more famous stops.
Reached by a short drive off the Avenue of the Giants, this loop circles through a particularly dense stand of old growth. The grade is easy, but the mood is dramatic, with towering trunks, filtered light, and a muted hush that invites slow walking and frequent stops. It’s a good choice when Founders Grove feels busy or you want a more contemplative experience.
