Go early or late in the day for cooler temperatures and bring sturdy shoes, as the ground can be uneven and fragile around the active vents.

After viewing the painted hillside and quirky camps of Slab City, you can step beyond the art and follow sandy washes into open desert. It’s more of an informal ramble than a signed trail, but the flat terrain and distant mountain backdrops make it easy to orient. Go with a full water bottle, let someone know your plans, and enjoy how quickly the noise of the camp fades into quiet desert stillness.

On foot, you can leave the off-road area behind and hike steep, wind-shaped dunes for panoramic desert vistas.
Head to one of the less motorized sections or visit outside peak riding hours, then strike out along a dune ridge of your choosing. The sand is soft and the climbs are short but demanding, turning even a one- or two-mile hike into a serious workout. From the higher crests you’ll get endless views of rippling dunes, best photographed in low morning or evening light when the contours really pop.

This hike feels surprisingly dramatic compared with the flat fields around Niland, with twisting narrows, layered rock walls, and big desert views from the upper rim. You’ll climb several sturdy ladders and navigate some short scrambles, so it’s best for reasonably sure-footed hikers who are comfortable with exposure. Start early to beat the heat, and check conditions before you go, as slot canyons are no place to be if storms are in the forecast.
