01
Best overall pick
The Wildlands Conservancy Oak Glen Preserve
In Oak Glen • Shaded Mountain Preserve With Varied Trails • Best Mix Of Scenery And Ease
A free, family-friendly preserve with looping trails through orchards, oak woodland, and a montane botanic garden.
If you only have time for one hike near Oak Glen, make it here. Easy-to-follow loops wander past ponds, meadows, and viewpoints, with plenty of options to shorten or extend your outing. Weekends in apple season get busy, so arrive early for cooler temperatures and quieter paths.
02
Close-by foothill escape
El Dorado Ranch Park
Foothills Above Yucaipa • Oak-Dotted Open-Space Park • Best For Mellow Evening Hikes
Rolling singletrack climbs gently through grassland and oaks, with wide views back toward Oak Glen and the valley.
Just down the hill from Oak Glen, El Dorado Ranch feels wild without being remote. The interconnected trails let you put together anything from a quick leg-stretcher to a longer loop, and the west-facing slopes light up at sunset. Expect some steady climbing but nothing overly technical.
03
Wide-open canyon miles
Wildwood Canyon State Park
East Yucaipa • Rugged State Park With Ridgeline Trails • Best For Building Mileage
A large, uncrowded park where old ranch roads and narrower paths climb into broad canyons and open ridges.
Wildwood Canyon is where local hikers go when they want space to roam. You can keep things moderate on lower canyon routes or push higher onto ridges for big views of the San Bernardino range and Oak Glen's plateau. Shade is limited, so plan for early starts on warm days and bring plenty of water.
04
Short, steep summit
Zanja Peak Trail
Below Oak Glen Off Oak Glen Road • Exposed Ridge Climb To A Peak • Best For Quick Workout And Views
A brisk out-and-back climb that rewards steady uphill effort with a true summit feel and sweeping valley panoramas.
Zanja Peak packs a lot of elevation into a relatively short distance, making it a favorite training hike. The route is straightforward but mostly unshaded, so it feels tougher in the heat. On clear days, the summit delivers a wide-angle look at Oak Glen's bench above you and the Inland Empire stretching far below.
05
Big-mountain adventure
Vivian Creek Trail into the San Gorgonio Wilderness
Forest Falls, In Mill Creek Canyon • High-Elevation Wilderness Trail • Best For Experienced Hikers
A steep, rocky mountain trail that quickly leaves the road behind for deep forest, cold creeks, and long-haul summit potential.
A short drive from Oak Glen, the Vivian Creek trailhead is the launch point for serious San Gorgonio outings, but many hikers simply enjoy the first few miles to the creek crossings and shaded benches. The grade is demanding from the start, with loose rock and narrow sections that call for sturdy footwear. Check conditions, permits, and weather before committing to a longer push higher into the wilderness.
