Shelf Road Trail
Above Downtown Ojai • Wide Hillside Road-Trail With Open Vistas • Easiest Scenic Leg-Stretcher
A gently rolling path skirting the hillside above town with constant views over the Ojai Valley and surrounding peaks.
Shelf Road is the trail locals send visitors to when they want an easy, rewarding walk without leaving town. The old road contours along the slope, passing citrus and avocado groves as the valley opens up below you. Go at golden hour for the best light and watch the Topa Topa cliffs pick up their famous pink glow.

Most versatile network
Ventura River Preserve
Ventura River Corridor West Of Ojai • Riverbed And Oak-Woodland Trail System • Best Choose-Your-Own-Distance Option
A sprawling preserve with braided riverbed paths, shady oak groves, and enough side trails to tailor anything from a mellow stroll to a solid half-day outing.
The Ventura River Preserve is where Ojai goes to wander: you can follow sandy tracks along the dry riverbed, duck into shaded side canyons, or climb to overlooks above the watercourse. In wetter months you’ll hear the river and hop a few stones; in summer, the broad, open channels feel almost desert-like. Start on one of the main signed trails, then link loops to fit your time and energy.

Best moderate canyon hike
Cozy Dell Trail
Highway 33 Canyon North Of Meiners Oaks • Steep Singletrack Through Chaparral And Oak Pockets • Top Pick For A Half-Day Workout With Views
A punchy climb from the canyon bottom to a ridgeline perch, trading effort for big looks into the Ventura River gorge and out toward the Pacific on clear days.
Cozy Dell starts right off Highway 33 and wastes no time gaining elevation, zigzagging uphill through coastal sage, boulders, and pockets of oak shade. A couple of well-placed benches and outcrops make natural turnaround points if you don’t want the full climb. Make this one an early-morning or cool-season hike, when the sun is lower and the canyon feels its most serene.

Classic big-elevation route
Pratt Trail
East End Of Ojai • Forest And Ridgeline Climb Into High Country • Go-To Route For Strong Hikers
A sustained ascent from citrus groves into pine-scented highlands, with expanding views that reward every switchback.
Starting near the end of a quiet residential lane, the Pratt Trail works upward from the valley floor into the front range of the Los Padres. After an initial stretch past orchards, the path narrows and steepens, alternating between shade and exposed ridges with long looks back over Ojai. Many locals turn around at signed viewpoints or junctions, while others push higher to link with longer backcountry routes.

Best waterfall day trip
Rose Valley Falls Trail
Rose Valley North Of Ojai • Shady Creekside Path To A Seasonal Falls • Family-Friendly Adventure In The Forest
A short, mostly gentle walk through cool woods leading to a delicate multi-tiered waterfall spilling over mossy rock.
Though it requires a scenic drive into the mountains, Rose Valley Falls is one of the most satisfying low-effort hikes near Ojai. The trail follows a small creek through firs and alders, feeling markedly cooler and more alpine than the valley below. Flow is best in winter and spring, when kids and adults alike can linger at the base and explore the dripping alcoves around the falls.
