Best riverfront stroll
Lewis S. Eaton Trail
North Fresno Riverfront • Paved Multi-Use River Trail • Best Close-To-Home Escape
A level, river-hugging path that’s ideal for easy mileage, sunset walks, and bike-friendly outings from Old Fig Garden.
Starting from trailheads near Woodward Park, the Lewis S. Eaton Trail follows the bluffs above the San Joaquin River with long views toward the Sierra on clear days. It’s an easy choice when you want fresh air without a long drive, with wide pavement, occasional shade, and side paths that let you duck closer to the edge of the bluffs. Go early or late in the day for cooler temperatures and the best light over the river corridor.

Best park-and-trail combo
Woodward Park & River Bluff Trails
Woodward Park, North Fresno • Bluffside Park With Dirt And Gravel Paths • Best Mix Of Park And Trail
A large city park that hides a surprisingly varied network of bluff and riverbank trails just a short hop from Old Fig Garden.
Beyond the picnic areas and ponds, Woodward Park drops toward the San Joaquin River with singletrack and wider paths that loop along the rim and down toward the water. You can tailor a quick 30-minute leg-stretcher or link paths for a longer run with a bit of up-and-down and big-sky views. It’s especially handy for families or groups where some want a true trail feel and others are happier staying near lawns and playgrounds.
03
Best lake views
Millerton Lake State Recreation Area
Northeast Of Fresno Near Friant • Lakeside Foothill Trail Network • Best For Lake Views And Summer Evenings
Rolling foothill trails above Millerton Lake offer blue-water views, golden grasslands, and optional steep climbs within an easy drive of town.
From the west side of the lake, a mix of dirt roads and singletrack winds along the shoreline and up surrounding hills, giving you a choose-your-own-distance outing. In cooler months you get green slopes and open vistas, while summer evenings bring warm breezes and glowing light on the water. Pack plenty of water and sun protection here, as shade is limited once you leave the picnic areas.
04
Best spring wildflower hike
McKenzie Table Mountain Preserve
Auberry Foothills • Volcanic Mesa With Seasonal Wildflowers • Spring Wildflower Standout
A broad volcanic plateau above the San Joaquin River with seasonal streams, basalt outcrops, and standout spring wildflower displays.
When the gate is open in spring, the climb onto Table Mountain rewards you with a wide, mostly gentle ramble across open grasslands punctuated by rock gardens and shallow creek crossings. On good years, the hillsides and flats explode with lupine, poppies, and other blooms, and you can walk to the edge of the mesa for sweeping views down into the river canyon. It’s more exposed than technical, so plan for wind, sun, and a relaxed pace to explore the nooks of the plateau.

Best full-day outing
San Joaquin River Gorge Recreation Area
Upper San Joaquin River Canyon • Rugged Foothill Canyon Trails • Best For Full-Day Adventure
A deeper canyon setting with longer loops, oak woodlands, and a suspension bridge that feels far from the city despite being a manageable drive.
Trails like the Wuh-ki’o and Pa’san Ridge routes wind through rolling terrain, dropping toward the river and climbing to viewpoints that look across the folded foothills. The suspension bridge over the San Joaquin is a natural turnaround for moderate hikers, while stronger parties can push on for bigger loops that fill most of the day. Expect more exposure and elevation change here than on Fresno’s in-town paths, along with a satisfying sense of being out in the foothills proper.
