01
Best overall pick
Spenceville Wildlife Area
Foothills East Of Wheatland • Rolling Oak Woodland Trail Network • All-Around Day Hike Choice
A sprawling wildlife area with creekside routes, open ridges, and the popular waterfall hike locals call Fairy Falls.
Spenceville is where many Olivehurst hikers go when they want a real foothills outing without heading deep into the mountains. The trails wind through classic blue oak savanna, with spring wildflowers, seasonal creeks, and broad views over ranchland. Go early on warm days, bring plenty of water, and expect some exposed sections and shared use with hunters in season.

Closest in-town escape
Feather River Parkway Trail
Along The Feather River In Yuba City • Paved Riverfront Greenway • Easy Local Stretch-Your-Legs Walk
A flat riverside path that works for everything from quick dog walks to sunset strolls with views of the Feather River.
If you want something close and uncomplicated, the Feather River Parkway Trail is the go-to option. The paved path and side dirt tracks weave through cottonwoods and open stretches along the levee, with plenty of birdlife and river views. It is an easy spot to log a few miles after work or introduce visitors to the local river corridor.

Iconic local landscape
Sutter Buttes Guided Hikes
Sutter Buttes Northwest Of Olivehurst • Guided Mountain Loop And Ridge Walks • Scenic Half-Day Outing
Guided hikes into the Sutter Buttes offer rare access to rugged volcanic peaks nicknamed the world’s smallest mountain range.
Most of the Sutter Buttes are on private land, so joining a guided hike is the way to explore this distinctive ring of peaks. Routes typically follow ranch roads and singletrack up and around knobby ridges, with wide-open views over the Sacramento Valley on clear days. Expect a moderate workout, variable footing, and a strong sense of hiking somewhere you cannot just wander into on your own.
04
Best for birdwatchers
Bobelaine Audubon Sanctuary
Near Nicolaus Along The Feather River • Shady Riparian Nature Preserve • Quiet Wildlife-Focused Stroll
A peaceful loop network through dense riverside forest where the focus is on birds, shade, and slow wandering rather than distance.
Bobelaine feels worlds away from the highway, with narrow footpaths threading through cottonwoods, oaks, and understory thickets. The terrain is mostly flat, making it a good choice for a slower-paced walk or a low-key morning with binoculars. Trails can be a bit overgrown and buggy in warm months, so closed shoes, long sleeves, and insect repellent are smart to bring.
05
Best river canyon hike
South Yuba River State Park – Buttermilk Bend Trail
Near Bridgeport In The Sierra Foothills • Riverside Singletrack With Spring Blooms • Scenic Weekend Road-Trip Hike
A gently rolling trail above the South Yuba River with big canyon views and standout wildflowers in a good spring.
Although it is a bit more of a drive from Olivehurst, the Buttermilk Bend Trail is worth saving for a clear weekend day. The path hugs the hillside above turquoise water, with frequent viewpoints and side spots to sit and watch the river below. Parking fills quickly in peak season, so arrive early, expect a day-use fee, and pack plenty of water because the trail is mostly exposed.
