01
Best overall pick
Orland Buttes Trail
Black Butte Lake, West Of Orland • Rocky Butte And Lakeshore Loop • Local Favorite
A short but rewarding climb above Black Butte Lake with wide-open Sacramento Valley views.
Starting near the Black Butte Lake dam, this trail winds up the Orland Buttes for sweeping panoramas of the water and surrounding ranchland. The footing is rocky and exposed, but the distance is manageable, making it a solid choice for sunrise or sunset hikes. On clear days you can spot distant Coast Range and Lassen peaks on the horizon.
02
Best lakefront ramble
Black Butte Lake Shoreline Trails
Black Butte Lake Recreation Area • Rolling Lakeside Path Network • Best For Relaxed Outings
Gentle paths trace the coves and inlets of Black Butte Lake, with easy options for rambling and picnics.
Around the south and east shores of Black Butte Lake, informal paths and service roads link campgrounds, coves, and fishing spots. You can piece together a mellow out-and-back along the water, with oak shade in places and frequent spots to duck down to the shore. It is an easy go-to when you want fresh air, birdlife, and views without a big climb.
03
Best creekside canyon walk
Yahi Trail, Upper Bidwell Park
Upper Bidwell Park, Chico • Creekside Singletrack In Volcanic Canyon • Best For Families
A shaded path follows Big Chico Creek through lava rock walls and swimming holes on the east side of Chico.
From the parking areas at the end of Upper Park Road, the Yahi Trail slips into a quieter corridor away from the dirt road and follows Big Chico Creek upstream. The grade is gentle, with frequent access to the water and plenty of spots to stop, play, or picnic. It is popular but rarely feels crowded if you start early or head a bit farther up-canyon.
04
Best workout hike
North Rim and B Trail Loop, Upper Bidwell Park
Foothills Above Chico • Rugged Rim And Singletrack Loop • Best For Strong Hikers
Linking the North Rim and B trails creates a longer loop with big views over Chico and the Sacramento Valley.
This loop uses the higher North Rim Trail on the way out and the tighter, twistier B Trail to return through classic Bidwell Park lava rock terrain. Expect sustained ups and downs, minimal shade, and rewarding vistas of the city, valley, and distant Sutter Buttes. It is a great training hike close to Orland when you want something more demanding than a simple out-and-back.
05
Best wildlife and river walk
Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge, Ord Bend Unit
Sacramento River Corridor, South Of Orland • River Levee And Riparian Loop • Quietest Escape
Short trails explore cottonwood groves, side channels, and levees along the Sacramento River with excellent birdwatching.
Just a short drive southeast of Orland, the Ord Bend Unit offers mellow walking routes through restored riparian habitat. The paths are mostly flat, making them accessible for a wide range of hikers while still feeling wild and remote. Visit in the cooler seasons or early mornings for migrating waterfowl, raptors, and mist rising off the river.
