Bridgeport, South Yuba River State Park • Riverside Wildflower Trail • Scenic Family-Friendly Walk

A gently rolling path above the South Yuba River, famous for its spring blooms and easygoing terrain.

Just west of Penn Valley at the historic Bridgeport covered bridge, Buttermilk Bend follows the river with big views and constant water sounds. In spring the slopes explode with poppies, lupine, and other wildflowers, but it’s a pleasant walk in any season. 02

Fairy Falls (Beale/Shingle Falls) Trail

Spenceville Wildlife Area, Southwest Of Penn Valley • Rolling Foothill Waterfall Hike • Half-Day Outing For Active Hikers

An open-country hike through oak-studded foothills to a multi-tiered waterfall and rugged rocky gorge.

The Fairy Falls route starts in the Spenceville Wildlife Area and winds past old ranch roads, seasonal creeks, and grazing land before dropping toward the falls. It’s mostly exposed, so start early on warm days and bring plenty of water. The final approach to the cascades is rocky and uneven, but the payoff is a dramatic set of pools and churning water that feels a world away from town.

Deer Creek Tribute Trail

Near Downtown Nevada City • Creekside Loop With Suspension Bridge • Quick Scenic Escape From Town

A network of short trails along Deer Creek, linked by a photogenic suspension bridge and forested paths.

Just above Nevada City, the Deer Creek Tribute Trail threads together shady walking paths, neighborhood connectors, and creek overlooks. You can keep it to an easy hour-long loop or wander farther as you explore different segments on either side of the water. The modest elevation changes and proximity to town make it a convenient option when you want a taste of the woods without committing to a full-day hike.

04

Empire Mine State Historic Park Trails

East Grass Valley • Forest And Mining-History Trail Network • All-Ages Historical Wander

Miles of interlinked forest paths around one of California’s most storied hard-rock gold mines.

The trails at Empire Mine weave through pine and oak forest, passing mine buildings, old shafts, and relics from Grass Valley’s Gold Rush past. Routes range from short, stroller-friendly paths near the main grounds to longer loops like the popular Hardrock and Osborne Hill trails. It’s an easy place to mix mellow hiking with a bit of local history, and the shade makes it appealing on hot summer afternoons.

05

Hoyt Trail

South Yuba River Canyon Near Nevada City • Steep Forested Canyon Trail • Cool-Weather Workout With Swimming Access

A short but steep trail that drops through forest to boulder-lined swimming spots on the South Yuba River.

The Hoyt Trail starts high above the river and quickly descends via switchbacks into the shaded South Yuba canyon. Once at the bottom, informal paths and granite boulders give access to clear pools and calmer stretches of water later in the season. The climb back out is a workout, so it’s best suited to hikers comfortable with sustained elevation gain and uneven footing.
