Classic summit hike
Corte Madera Mountain Trail
South Of Pine Valley In Cleveland National Forest • Rugged Summit Climb With Sheer Cliffs And Big Views • Iconic Local Summit
A demanding out-and-back to a dramatic rock wall with sweeping views over the backcountry.
This is the hike locals mention first when you ask about a real challenge near Pine Valley. The trail climbs steadily through chaparral and oak toward the towering south face of Corte Madera, with airy viewpoints along the way. Expect some rough, rocky sections, but you’re rewarded with cliff-edge perches and a sense of true wilderness.

Best overall pick
Big Laguna Mountain Loop
Laguna Mountains North Of Pine Valley • High-Country Pine Forest And Meadow Loop • Best Alpine-Feeling Escape
A flexible network of trails around Big Laguna Lake that feels more like the Sierra than inland San Diego.
Starting from the Sunrise Highway corridor, this loop strings together wide-open meadows, pockets of conifer forest, and seasonal lake views. You can tailor the distance with short family-friendly portions or a longer circuit that really stretches your legs. Come in fall for golden grasses under crisp blue skies, or in spring when the meadows burst with wildflowers.
03
Endurance outing
Noble Canyon Trail
Between Sunrise Highway And Pine Creek • Long Canyon Trail With Varied Terrain And Shade • Best Long-Distance Outing
A classic, mostly downhill canyon traverse that trades piney high country for a rocky, oak-lined creek corridor.
Often known as a mountain-bike classic, Noble Canyon also makes an excellent point-to-point or strenuous out-and-back hike. The upper sections feel cool and forested, then the trail drops into a rugged canyon with boulders, oaks, and seasonal water. Plan a shuttle if you want to enjoy the full descent without the grind back up to the ridge.
04
Big view for less effort
Garnet Peak via PCT
Sunrise Highway Ridge Above Pine Valley • Short, Rocky Viewpoint Hike On The Pct • Quick Big-View Hit
A brief but steep walk to one of the most expansive viewpoints over Anza-Borrego Desert and the Laguna range.
From the roadside, you follow a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail before branching up the rocky knob of Garnet Peak. The climb is short enough to fit before or after work but still feels adventurous, especially when the wind is up on the ridge. Clear days bring far-reaching views over desert badlands to distant mountain ranges, perfect for sunrise or sunset.
05
Seasonal waterfall gem
Kitchen Creek Falls Trail
East Of Pine Valley Off Interstate 8 • Waterfall Hike Through Chaparral Canyon • Springtime Waterfall Fix
A moderate hike that follows Kitchen Creek toward a series of seasonal cascades tucked in a rocky gorge.
This trail feels far from the freeway once you drop into the canyon, with granite slabs, pools, and a surprisingly lush creek corridor after good rains. It’s best tackled in late winter or spring, when the falls are running and temperatures are reasonable. Be prepared for some rock-hopping near the end and pack extra water, as shade can be limited on warmer days.
