Best remote adventure
North Yolla Bolly Lake Trail
Yolla Bolly–Middle Eel Wilderness West Of Platina • High-Country Wilderness Trek • Best For Experienced Hikers
A rugged out-and-back into the Yolla Bolly high country, ending at a small alpine lake beneath big, open ridgelines.
From the end of a long forest road, this trail climbs through fir and pine toward North Yolla Bolly Lake, with sweeping views opening up as you gain elevation. Expect a full-day outing, with uneven tread, seasonal snow, and few other hikers. It’s a true back-of-beyond experience, so go prepared with extra water, layers, and a good map or GPS track.
02
Most unique rock feature
Massacre Natural Bridge Trail
Highway 36 Corridor Southwest Of Platina • Short Canyon And Creek Walk • Best For Curious Explorers
A short hike down to a clear creek passing under an impressive natural rock bridge hidden in a quiet canyon.
This mellow trail drops from the roadside into a folded little canyon where the creek has carved a tunnel through solid rock. Most people poke around the pools, explore both sides of the bridge, and linger in the shade on hot days. It’s close enough for an easy half-day outing from Platina, but the road can be rough, so check conditions before you go.
03
Best summit views
Kanaka Peak Trail
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area – Southwest • Forest Climb To Panoramic Summit • Best For Big-View Day Hikes
A steady forested climb to a rocky high point with sweeping views over Whiskeytown Lake and the surrounding ranges.
Starting from the back side of Whiskeytown, the Kanaka Peak route threads through mixed forest before breaking out near the top to wide-open vistas. On clear days you can spot Shasta, Lassen, and the patchwork of ridges stretching back toward Platina. The grade is moderate but persistent, making it a solid workout without feeling technical.
04
Quiet waterfall escape
Boulder Creek Falls Trail
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area – South Shore • Shaded Creek And Waterfall Hike • Best Shoulder-Season Hike
A moderate walk along a cool creek to a tall, multi-stream waterfall tucked into a lush, narrow ravine.
The trail follows Boulder Creek through dense forest, with small cascades and side streams leading up to the main falls. The final approach drops into a steep-sided pocket where the waterfall spills over a dark rock wall, especially impressive in spring. It’s a great choice when summer heat makes exposed ridges less appealing or when you want a quieter alternative to the park’s busier trails.
05
Best family-friendly waterfall walk
Brandy Creek Falls Trail
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area – Brandy Creek • Short, Scenic Waterfall Ramble • Best For Casual Hikers And Families
A relatively short hike up a shaded canyon to tiered falls, with footbridges and rock steps that keep things interesting but approachable.
Leaving from the upper Brandy Creek area, this trail winds through cool woods and crosses the creek several times before reaching the falls. The route has some roots, rocks, and short steeper pitches, but most reasonably fit hikers and older kids handle it well. It’s a nice pick when you want something rewarding without committing to an all-day trek from the Platina area.
