Classic Sierra lake day hike
Jamison Lake via Jamison Creek Trail
Plumas-Eureka State Park, Jamison Creek Corridor • Alpine Lake Out-And-Back With Waterfalls • Classic Sierra Nevada Day Hike
A steady, scenic climb along Jamison Creek to a high basin of clear lakes and granite walls.[2]
Start near the historic mining area and follow the well-used path as it threads through mixed forest, past small cascades and open granite patches.[2] The grade is moderate but consistent, making it a rewarding outing for hikers who like a bit of effort with frequent creekside breaks. Aim for a morning start in summer to beat the heat and enjoy calmer conditions around the lakes.

Best for big summit views
Eureka Peak Loop Trail
Plumas-Eureka State Park, Eureka Peak Side • Summit Loop Mixing Dirt Road And Singletrack • Best For Wide-Open Vistas And Mining History
Loop up Eureka Peak for sweeping views over the Mohawk Valley and the Lakes Basin, plus a taste of the area’s mining past.[2][5]
This loop links old jeep roads and narrower trail to gain the rounded summit of Eureka Peak, where relics and views tell the story of the park’s Gold Rush era.[5] The climb is steady and exposed in spots, but you’re rewarded with a 360-degree panorama that takes in forested ridges, distant volcanic peaks, and the rocky lakes country to the north. Bring layers and plenty of water, as wind and sun can both be strong on the upper slopes.

Easy family loop
Madora Lake Loop
Near Graeagle And Plumas-Eureka Golf Course • Gentle Forest-And-Lakeside Loop • Best For Kids, Strollers, And Casual Walkers
A flat loop around Madora Lake with easy footing, frequent water views, and a relaxed, close-to-town feel.[2][4]
This short circuit is a local favorite for low-key evening walks, first-day-at-altitude outings, and easy rides with younger kids.[4] The path winds through open pine forest and along the lake’s edge, where you can watch birds, look for trout rising, or pause on a bench in the shade. Because it sits right outside town yet feels tucked into the trees, it’s an ideal option when you want fresh air without committing to a big hike.

Best alpine basin escape
Gray Eagle Creek Trail to Long Lake
Lakes Basin Recreation Area North Of Graeagle • Granite Creek Canyon To High Mountain Lake • Best For A Half-Day Mountain Outing
Follow Gray Eagle Creek into a classic granite basin and finish at Long Lake’s deep, cold water and big Sierra views.[4][7]
From the trailhead off the Gold Lake Highway, the route climbs alongside bouldery Gray Eagle Creek, with cool air and the sound of water most of the way.[4] The moderate grade and well-defined path make it a natural pick for hikers who want a half-day adventure with plenty of scenery but no scrambling. Long Lake at the top is perfect for a picnic on warm rock slabs or a quick, bracing swim beneath craggy peaks.

Quick waterfall payoff
Frazier Falls Trail
South Of Graeagle Off The Gold Lake Highway • Short, Mostly Paved Walk To A Dramatic Overlook • Best Quick Stop Or Multigenerational Outing
A brief, mostly paved walk leads to a railed viewpoint high above the plunging Frazier Falls.[4][7]
This is an easy add-on to any day in the Plumas-Eureka and Lakes Basin area, especially when you’re traveling with a wide range of ages and abilities.[4] The gently rolling path crosses open granite and small bridges before reaching a sturdy overlook platform, where you can feel the spray and watch the falls drop into a steep, forested gorge. Come in late spring or early summer for peak flow and cooler air in the shaded canyon.
