Best first stop
Founders Grove Nature Loop
Avenue Of The Giants East Of Redcrest • Iconic Old-Growth Redwood Loop • Easy, Must-See Introduction To The Park
A short, mostly flat loop that packs in towering redwoods, downed giants, and classic Avenue of the Giants scenery in under an hour.
If you only have time for one walk near Redcrest, this is the one that feels like a greatest-hits reel of the redwood forest. The loop is well-signed, gently graded, and full of photo stops, making it friendly for mixed-ability groups and first-time visitors. Go early or near dusk to dodge tour-bus crowds and let the grove feel a little more hushed.
02
Most cathedral-like grove
Rockefeller Loop Trail
Bull Creek Flats, West Of Avenue Of The Giants • Quiet Riverside Redwood Grove • Best For A Serene, Camera-Ready Stroll
A peaceful loop along Bull Creek where massive redwoods, filtered light, and fewer crowds make the forest feel like a natural cathedral.
Rockefeller Loop trades quick roadside access for a slightly more tucked-away feel, and that keeps the vibe calmer than some big-name groves. The trail is short and mostly level, tracing Bull Creek with frequent spur views to the water and some of the park’s most photogenic trunks. It’s a great pick when you want that ‘alone in the redwoods’ feeling without committing to a long day.
03
Best creekside loop
Homestead and Bull Creek Trail North Loop
Bull Creek Flats Area, Southwest Of Redcrest • Longer Redwood And Creek Day Hike • Best For A Moderate Half-Day Adventure
A rewarding loop that strings together big trees, open creek views, and quieter stretches of trail away from the roadside pullouts.
Starting near the Bull Creek Flats area, this loop gives you time to settle into the rhythm of the forest rather than just peeking from a turnout. Expect several hours on trail, rolling terrain, and occasional roots and mud, but no technical sections for prepared hikers. When the creek is running clear and the sun hits the trunks in late afternoon, it’s one of the most satisfying medium-length hikes near Redcrest.
04
Top summit challenge
Grasshopper Peak via Grasshopper Multi-Use Trail
Backcountry Ridges Above Albee Creek • Strenuous Summit And Ridge Hike • Best For Experienced Hikers Seeking Big Views
A demanding out-and-back climb from redwood groves up to open ridges and a summit with wide views over Humboldt Redwoods.
This route starts in the cool shade of the forest and then grinds steadily upward, trading towering trunks for open slopes and long sightlines as you gain elevation. It’s a full-day outing with significant elevation gain, so bring plenty of water, layers, and a realistic turnaround time. On clear days, the payoff from the higher sections makes the effort feel more than justified, especially if you’ve already sampled the shorter grove walks.
05
Best mossy forest stroll
Drury-Chaney Loop Trail
North Of Redcrest Near Pepperwood • Lush, Ferny Redwood Loop • Best For A Quiet, Storybook-Feeling Walk
A gently rolling loop through dense ferns, moss-draped branches, and tall, evenly spaced redwoods just a short drive north of town.
Drury-Chaney feels a bit more enclosed and mossy than some of the big, open groves closer to Redcrest, which gives it a cozy, storybook atmosphere. The trail surface is generally friendly but can be slick after rain, so footwear with decent grip helps. It’s a great choice when fog hangs low in the canopy and you want to lean into the moody side of the North Coast forest.
