01
Best overall pick
Crockett Hills Regional Park
Just North Of Rodeo • Rolling Ridgetop And Canyon Trails • Local Favorite For Varied Loops
A close-to-town network of dirt trails and ranch roads with big views over the Carquinez Strait and plenty of options for short or long hikes.
From Rodeo, Crockett Hills is the quickest way to feel like you have escaped to the country without a long drive. Moderate climbs lead to open ridges where you can see bridges, refineries, and ship traffic framed by grassy hills and oak pockets. Look for the loop combinations off Crockett Ranch Staging Area if you want a solid workout without committing to an all-day outing.
02
Best for bay views
Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline
Carquinez Strait Shoreline • Blufftop Shoreline Paths • Scenic Outlook Pick
Narrow singletrack and fire roads trace the bluffs above the strait, with constant water views and a classic Carquinez Bridge backdrop.
Start near Crockett or Port Costa and follow the shoreline trails that contour above the water, trading shade and sun as they dip in and out of small drainages. The Carquinez Overlook-style routes are ideal if you like your hikes with a bit of exposure and lots to look at, from passing ships to tidal shifts below. Wind can really pick up here, so bring a layer even on sunny days.
03
Best easy coastal walk
Point Pinole Regional Shoreline
Southwest Of Rodeo Toward Richmond • Flat Bayside Trails And Pier • Relaxed Outing Pick
A mostly flat network of wide paths through eucalyptus groves and shoreline meadows that ends at a long fishing pier over San Pablo Bay.
Point Pinole is the go-to choice when you want a mellow, social hike without worrying about steep climbs. The park feels surprisingly remote once you are out on the point, with wide water views, birdlife, and long sightlines back toward Rodeo and the bridges. It is a comfortable pick for mixed-ability groups, strollers, and anyone easing into longer walks.
04
Best all-day adventure
Wildcat Canyon Regional Park
Inland Between Richmond And Orinda • Rugged Canyon And Ridge Network • Big-Mile Training Ground
Steep fire roads and singletrack climb from creek bottoms to wide-open ridges, with long-distance connections toward Tilden and San Pablo Reservoir.
Wildcat Canyon rewards the extra drive from Rodeo with a sense of scale you do not always get closer to the shoreline. Once on the ridge, you can string together long loops with views out over the Bay, Mount Tam, and, on clear days, Mount Diablo in the distance. Expect more sustained climbs here, making it a smart choice for hikers training for longer mountain trips or simply wanting to spend several hours on trail.
05
Best quiet escape
Fernandez Ranch
Between Hercules And Martinez • Oak-Studded Ranchland Preserve • Peaceful Nature Fix
A smaller, low-key preserve with creekside paths and hilltop viewpoints that feels tucked away despite being minutes from the freeway.
Run by a local land trust, Fernandez Ranch has a more intimate feel than some of the larger regional parks, with narrow trails winding through shade, open grasslands, and old ranch infrastructure. Shorter loops along the creek are perfect when you only have an hour, while longer climbs to the upper ridges offer satisfying panoramas toward the Delta and interior hills. It is a good choice if you prefer birdsong and cattle over crowds and cyclists.
