01
Best overall pick
Wildcat Canyon Regional Park
Hills Above San Pablo • Expansive Ridge And Canyon Park • Local Favorite For Varied Mileage
Wildcat Canyon is the closest place to trade San Pablo streets for big grassy hills, long ridge walks, and classic East Bay views.
From the neighborhoods above San Pablo you can be on dirt in minutes, climbing toward the San Pablo Ridge Trail or dropping along Wildcat Creek. Wide fire roads make navigation simple, while side paths let you build steeper loops if you want a workout. On clear days you see Mount Tam and the Bay; on foggy mornings the trails feel quiet and tucked away despite being so close to town.
02
Best bayfront escape
Point Pinole Regional Shoreline
North Richmond Shoreline • Quiet Bayside Shoreline Park • Best For Breezy Coastal Walks
Point Pinole offers easy, mostly flat trails through eucalyptus groves out to long bay views and a breezy fishing pier.
This is an ideal pick when you want movement without a big climb, or you are hiking with mixed-ability groups. A network of gravel paths and old rail grades loops around the point, with plenty of benches and picnic spots where you can watch ships slide by. Go later in the day for wind-cooled miles and a wide-open sunset over San Pablo Bay.
03
Classic East Bay hub
Tilden Regional Park
Berkeley Hills • Classic East Bay Hill Park • Best For Half-Day Adventures
Tilden packs in panoramic ridge walks, shady canyon trails, and lake and redwood options all in one big, busy park.
From San Pablo, a short drive over the hills drops you into trailheads for Nimitz Way, Seaview, and other well-marked routes. You can keep it casual with a mostly paved stroll along Nimitz or stitch together steeper singletrack for a more demanding loop. After your hike, nearby lake and garden areas make it easy to cool down, linger, and make a full outing of the trip.
04
Best wide-open escape
Briones Regional Park
East Of Martinez • Open Ranchland And Rolling Hills • Best For Wide-Open Views
Briones serves up big sky, grazing cattle, and rolling hill trails that feel far more remote than the drive from San Pablo suggests.
Trails here climb steadily from valley bottoms to spine-like ridges, rewarding you with sweeping views over the Diablo Valley and back toward the Bay. Expect sun, cows, and seasonal mud; this is classic East Bay ranch country, not manicured parkland. In spring the hills glow green and wildflowers line the paths, making even shorter loops feel special.
05
Laid-back shoreline option
San Pablo Bay Regional Shoreline
Richmond And Hercules Shoreline • Flat Bayside Trail Network • Best Mellow Birding Walk
The San Pablo Bay Regional Shoreline strings together levee and shoreline paths with wide water views and frequent bird sightings.
Sections of the San Pablo Bay Trail here offer long, mostly level stretches ideal for easy walking, jogging, or pushing a stroller. The landscape shifts between tidal marsh, open water, and industrial backdrops, giving a sense of the working bay as well as its natural side. Bring binoculars if you have them; shorebirds, egrets, and raptors are regular company along these routes.
